[Behavior of the intrinsic fibrinolytic system in healthy blood donors].

Folia Haematol Int Mag Klin Morphol Blutforsch

Published: March 1985

The behaviour of the intrinsic fibrinolytic system was studied in healthy donors using the blood activator inventory test of Kluft. Moreover, the influence of several pre-analytical factors was examined. The activity of the intrinsic system was higher in the afternoon than in the morning. Medium physical stress caused an increase in activity which was not due to the influence of extrinsic activators. By inhalation of cigarette smoke the activity was decreased. In healthy volunteers the values of the test showed rightward shifted frequency distribution. Females between the age of 20 and 39 yr had significantly higher intrinsic fibrinolytic activity than males of the same age group. In both sexes the activity tended to decreasing values with increasing age.

[Thrombosis in Hemodialysis Tunnelled Central Venous Catheters: From Pathogenesis to Therapeutic Strategies].

G Ital Nefrol

October 2024

U.O.C. di Nefrologia e Dialisi, Ospedale Generale Regionale "F. Miulli", Acquaviva delle Fonti (BA).

Central venous catheter-related thrombosis is a frequent non-infectious complication, typically associated with catheter dysfunction and hemodialysis inadequacy. Central venous catheters (CVCs) are categorized into non-tunnelled and tunnelled types, wherein the choice depends on patient's clinical conditions and the diagnostic and therapeutic workup. Tunnelled CVCs (tCVCs) are sought whenever an arteriovenous fistula is unfeasible or as primary access in patients with poor prognosis.

Introduction: Viscoelastic hemostatic assays (VHA) are integral in contemporary hemostatic resuscitation, offering insights into clot formation, firmness, and lysis for rapid diagnosis and targeted therapy. Large animal models, particularly swine, provide anatomical and physiological analogies for coagulation research. Despite the growing use of VHAs, the ClotPro device's applicability in porcine models remains unexplored.

Article Synopsis
  • Thrombo-inflammation is linked to severe cardiovascular and infectious diseases, and inhibiting Factor XIIa (FXIIa) in the coagulation pathway could be a promising treatment for related disorders.
  • Current small-molecule FXIIa inhibitors have been largely ineffective, but recent compounds developed through structure-based drug design show significant anticoagulation and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • The new compounds demonstrated impressive effectiveness in animal models and presented a safe profile, indicating their potential as oral therapies for thrombo-inflammation.

Current and potentially novel antithrombotic treatment in acute ischemic stroke.

Electronic address:

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is the most common type of stroke and requires immediate reperfusion. Current acute reperfusion therapies comprise the administration of intravenous thrombolysis and/or endovascular thrombectomy. Although these acute reperfusion therapies are increasingly successful, optimized secondary antithrombotic treatment remains warranted, specifically to reduce the risk of major bleeding complications.
