Biological Characteristics and Whole-Genome Analysis of a Porcine Phage.

Vet Sci

January 2025

College of Animal Science and Technology, Shihezi University, Shihezi 832003, China.

(1) Background: In recent years, the increasing emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens in pig farms has begun to pose a severe threat to animal welfare and, by extension, public health. In this study, we aimed to explore the biological characteristics and genomic features of bacteriophages that are capable of lysing porcine multidrug-resistant , which was isolated from sewage. In doing so, we provided a reference for phage therapies that can be used to treat multidrug-resistant strains.

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, poses serious global health risks, including the potential for secondary liver injury related to metabolic enzyme changes.
  • This study explores how prior infection with SARS-CoV-2 affects alcohol-induced liver damage, using transgenic mice that express human ACE2.
  • Results showed that infected mice experienced worsened liver injury after alcohol consumption, with alterations in metabolic enzymes and increased levels of a toxic alcohol byproduct, indicating a complex interaction between COVID-19 and alcohol effects on the liver.

Establishment of a New Real-Time Molecular Assay for the Detection of Babanki Virus in Africa.

Viruses

November 2024

Virology Department, Institut Pasteur de Dakar, 36 Avenue Pasteur, Dakar 220, Senegal.

Babanki virus is a subtype of the Sindbis virus, a widespread arthropod-borne alphavirus circulating in Eurasia, Africa, and Oceania. Characterized by rashes and arthritis, clinical infections due to Sindbis were mainly reported in Africa, Australia, Asia, and Europe. However, its sub-type, Babanki virus, was reported in Northern Europe and Africa, where its epidemiology potential remains poorly understood.

Isolation and Characterization of a Lytic Phage PaTJ Against .

Viruses

November 2024

Key Laboratory of Tropical Marine Bio-Resources and Ecology, South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou 510000, China.

is a major global threat to human health, and phage therapy has emerged as a promising strategy for treating infections caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens. In this study, we isolated and characterized a lytic phage, PaTJ, from wastewater. PaTJ belongs to the phage family , and is featured by short latency (30 min) and large burst size (10 PFU per infected cell).

Characterization and genomic analysis of a jumbo phage, PG216, with broad lytic activity against several Vibrio species.

Arch Virol

January 2025

Jiangsu Province Engineering Research Center for Marine Bio-resources Sustainable Utilization, College of Oceanography, Hohai University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.

In this study, a lytic phage, named PG216, was obtained from seawater collected in Qingdao, using Vibrio parahaemolyticus strain G299 as its host. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that phage PG216 has an icosahedral head with a diameter of 100 ± 6.7 nm and a contractible tail with a length of 126 ± 6.
