The ovarian steroid hormones, estrogen and progesterone, the levels of which fluctuate dynamically with the estrous cycle, alter circadian behavioral rhythms in mammals. However, it remains unclear whether the sleep-wake rhythm fluctuates with the menstrual cycle in humans. To ascertain the relationship between the menstrual cycle and sleep-wake rhythms, we evaluated the objective and long-term sleep-wake rhythms of ten healthy women using a recently developed wearable device.

This study investigated how the time of day affects physical performance and perceptual responses in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) athletes. Given the significance of circadian rhythms on athletic capabilities, we aimed to determine whether performance variations occur across different times of the day (morning, 10:00-11:00h; afternoon, 14:00-15:00h; and evening, 18:00-19:00h) and if these effects differ by sex. This review aims to critically evaluate the evidence on timed eating for weight loss, considering energetic and behavioural components to the timing of eating in humans. It has been hypothesised that timed eating interventions may alter energy balance in favour of weight loss by enhancing energy expenditure, specifically the thermic effect of food.

Purpose Of Review: The human circadian system regulates several physiological processes, including metabolism, which becomes significantly disrupted during critical illness. The common use of 24-h continuous nutrition support feeding in the intensive care unit (ICU) may further exacerbate these disruptions; this review evaluates recent evidence comparing continuous and intermittent feeding schedules in critically ill adults.
