Hydroxyacyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase: A biomarker for authentication of death from mechanical asphyxia.

Forensic Sci Int

January 2025

Department of Forensic Medicine, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Fudan University, 131 Dong'an Road, Shanghai 200032, PR China. Electronic address:

Death from mechanical asphyxia (DMA) refers to death from acute respiratory disorder caused by mechanical violence. Due to the absence of characteristic signs in corpses, it has been rather challenging to achieve the precise authentication of DMA. In this research, human pulmonary samples were collected and grouped according to different causes of death in search of potential biomarkers of DMA.

The comparative accuracy of handprints and footprints for stature and sex determination.

Forensic Sci Int Synerg

June 2025

Forensic Medicine and Toxicology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, Elsarayat Street, 11517, Cairo, Egypt.

One of the main goals of forensic medicine is the successful identification of unidentified bodies. This is essential in mass disasters, criminal medicolegal investigations, and most cases of deaths with poorly preserved remains. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of anthropometric determination of handprint versus footprint dimensions for sex and stature estimation in a sample of the Egyptian population and to formulate equations for stature and sex determination using hand and footprint anthropometric measures.

Pharmacogenetics is a branch of genomic medicine aiming to personalize drug prescription guidelines based on individual genetic information. This concept might lead to a reduction in adverse drug reactions, which place a heavy burden on individual patients' health and the economy of the healthcare system. The aim of this study was to present insights gained from the pharmacogenetics-based clustering of over 500 patients from the Croatian population.

Exploring the Potential of Genome-Wide Hybridization Capture Enrichment for Forensic DNA Profiling of Degraded Bones.

Genes (Basel)

December 2024

Australian Centre for Ancient DNA, The Environment Institute, School of Biological Sciences, The University of Adelaide, Adelaide, SA 5000, Australia.

Unlabelled: In many human rights and criminal contexts, skeletal remains are often the only available samples, and they present a significant challenge for forensic DNA profiling due to DNA degradation. Ancient DNA methods, particularly capture hybridization enrichment, have been proposed for dealing with severely degraded bones, given their capacity to yield results in ancient remains.

Background/objectives: This paper aims to test the efficacy of genome-wide capture enrichment on degraded forensic human remains compared to autosomal STRs analysis.
