Magnetic systems, wherein competing degree of freedoms arising from spin orbit coupling and crystal electric field lead to non-trivial magnetic ground states, remains in the forefront of research in condensed matter physics. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation on three-dimensional rare-earth based spin systems NdTaO4 and NdNbO4, where the Nd ions sit on a stretched diamond lattice. No signatures of long-range ordering and spin freezing are observed down to 1.

Advancing anthocyanin extraction: Optimising solvent, preservation, and microwave techniques for enhanced recovery from merlot grape Marc.

Food Chem

December 2024

Wine Science Programme, School of Chemical Sciences, The University of Auckland | Waipapa Taumata Rau, 23 Symonds Street, Auckland 1010, New Zealand. Electronic address:

Grape marc, a by-product of winemaking, is a rich source of bioactive compounds, yet efficient extraction methods suitable for industrial application remain underexplored. This study presents an integrated, three-stage approach to optimise the extraction of anthocyanins, phenolics, and tannins from Merlot grape marc. In the first stage, 12 solvents were evaluated using conventional solvent extraction, with 50 % ethanol (EtOH) acidified with hydrochloric acid (HCl) achieving the highest anthocyanin recovery after eight extraction cycles (0.

Whey protein isolate (WPI) has functional properties such as gelation and emulsification. Emulsion gels combine the benefits of both emulsions and hydrogels. In this study, WPI hydrogels and emulsion gels were developed with goji oil (GO) as the oil phase by the inclusion of blueberry extract (BE) in the protein matrix.

Improving the Long-Term Mechanical Properties of Thermoplastic Short Natural Fiber Compounds by Using Alternative Matrices.

Biomimetics (Basel)

January 2025

Macromolecular Chemistry and New Polymeric Materials, Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, University of Groningen, Nijenborgh 3, 9747 AG Groningen, The Netherlands.

Wood plastic composites (WPCs) offer a means to reduce the carbon footprint by incorporating natural fibers to enhance the mechanical properties. However, there is limited information on the mechanical properties of these materials under hostile conditions. This study evaluated composites of polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and polylactic acid (PLA) processed via extrusion and injection molding.

Konjac glucomannan foams integrated with bilayer phase change microcapsules for efficient heat storage and thermal insulation.

Carbohydr Polym

March 2025

Key Laboratory of Fermentation Engineering (Ministry of Education), Hubei Key Laboratory of Industry Microbiology, Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center of Industrial Fermentation, Hubei University of Technology, Wuhan 430068, China; Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK. Electronic address:

The traditional foams can only block heat loss, and cannot effectively store and release heat energy on demand to extend the insulation time. In this work, the paraffin-rich monolayer microcapsules were prepared using negatively charged phosphorylated cellulose nanofibers (CNF) as the emulsifier of Pickering emulsion. The positive chitosan was assembled on the surface of the monolayer microcapsules through an electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly method to prepare the bilayer microcapsules.
