Article Synopsis
  • Zein is a cost-effective vegetable protein from corn that creates a resistant and adhesive polymer ideal for encapsulating various bioactive compounds.
  • The synthesis of zein nanoparticles can be accomplished through several methods, including antisolvent precipitation, pH-driven processes, electrospraying, and solvent emulsification-evaporation, each offering unique benefits.
  • These zein nanoparticles are stable against environmental factors and have potential uses in cosmetics, food, and pharmaceuticals for their various biological properties, such as anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.

Application of Aspartic Acid Racemization for Age Estimation in a Spanish Sample.

Biology (Basel)

June 2022

Department of Anthropology, NMNH-MRC 112, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC 20560, USA.

Correct age-at-death estimation in adult individuals is one of the challenges of forensic investigation. Forensic anthropology macroscopic techniques are non-invasive methods for this purpose. However, several methods need to be applied to accurately estimate age, and the difference between chronological and predictive age may still be around ±10 years.

Article Synopsis
  • Filamentous actinobacteria are key in producing important secondary metabolites, especially antimicrobial compounds, through large biosynthetic gene clusters.
  • Protoplast fusion allows for whole genome recombination, but regenerating the cell wall limits the process by separating chromosomes from different parent lines.
  • L-forms, which can grow without a cell wall, promise a new method for fusion that could maintain multiple chromosomes, enhancing gene expression and ultimately increasing chemical diversity for novel antibiotic discovery.

Template-assisted strategies are widely used to fabricate nanostructured materials. By taking these strategies a step forward, herein we report the design of two chiral plasmonic nanostructures based on Au nanoparticle (NP) assemblies organized in clockwise and anticlockwise directions, having opposite response to circularly polarized light. The chiral plasmonic nanostructures are obtained by growing Au NPs on chiral templates based on d- and l-forms of alanine functionalized phenyleneethynylenes.
