A morphologically different cell type to the typically smooth muscle cell has been found in the inner medial layers of the splenic artery. Besides the morphological differences, typical criteria for a smooth muscle cell are demonstrated, giving an account of their identity. Morphological details are described. The importance of these cells as regards lesions of the vessel wall is briefly discussed.

Endothelial cells under disturbed flow release extracellular vesicles to promote inflammatory polarization of macrophages and accelerate atherosclerosis.

BMC Biol

Institute of Biomedical Engineering, West China School of Basic Medical Sciences & Forensic Medicine, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610041, China.

Background: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from endothelial cells (ECs) are increasingly recognized for their role in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. ECs experience varying degrees and types of blood flow depending on their specific arterial locations. In regions of disturbed flow, which are predominant sites for atherosclerotic plaque formation, the impact of disturbed flow on the secretion and function of ECs-derived EVs remains unclear.

Electronic address:

During the intestinal stage of Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) infection, it can stimulate host's intestinal peristalsis to expulse worms. 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is a neurotransmitter which can regulate the contraction of intestinal smooth muscle.

Low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LG-ESS) can present diagnostic challenges, due to its overlapping morphological features with other uterine mesenchymal tumors. Misdiagnosis rates remain significant, and immunohistochemical data for LG-ESS are limited to small series and inconsistent antibody panels. This study aimed to refine the IHC profile of LG-ESS by analyzing a large, molecularly confirmed series of 147 cases using a panel of 24 antibodies, including newer markers like transgelin and smoothelin.

Fumarate hydratase tumor predisposition syndrome (FHTPS) is caused by germline fumarate hydratase (FH) pathogenic variants (PVs). Most women with FHTPS develop FH-deficient (FHD) uterine leiomyomas (ULs), which arise 10 to 15 years earlier than aggressive FHD-renal cell carcinoma. We evaluate a previously proposed FHTPS screening strategy for women with ULs.
