Cardiovascular diseases such as stroke are a major cause of morbidity and mortality for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The underlying mechanisms connecting CKD and cardiovascular disease are yet to be fully elucidated, but inflammation is proposed to play an important role based on genetic association studies, studies of inflammatory biomarkers, and clinical trials of anti-inflammatory drug targets. There are multiple sources of both endogenous and exogenous inflammation in CKD, including increased production and decreased clearance of proinflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress, metabolic acidosis, chronic and recurrent infections, dialysis access, changes in adipose tissue metabolism, and disruptions in intestinal microbiota.

This qualitative evaluation elicited feedback from genetic counselors, referring clinicians, and patients from a single healthcare organization to understand the user-driven reasons for overall satisfaction and experience. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) is an evidence-based intervention that targets emotion regulation and impulsivity among adolescents, proven effective at decreasing high-risk behaviors. However, limited research exists on adolescents' perceptions of DBT-A, particularly in schools.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAlkaptonuria (AKU) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder caused by deficiency of homogentisic acid oxidase and resulting in accumulation of homogentisic acid in collagenous structures. It is characterized by a triad of homogentisic aciduria, bluish-black discoloration of connective tissues (ochronosis) and arthropathy of large weight bearing joints. We report on a middle-aged female patient with bilateral severe ochronotic arthritis of both hips and shoulder joints requiring total joint replacements as staged procedures which were done without complications offering a complete pain relief and a satisfactory clinical and functional outcome.

Since 2006, simple outdoor gyms have been installed on public squares all over Brazil. From the beginning, they were mainly conceived as for use by older people - especially women - within an international movement of 'healthy cities'. Based on an ethnography in Rio de Janeiro, our aim is to show in particular the politico-commercial dimensions of the fitness equipment.
