LIVING DONOR LIVER TRANSPLANT FOR INTRAHEPATIC CHOLANGIOCARCINOMA. AN INITIAL BRAZILIAN EXPERIENCE.

Arq Bras Cir Dig

December 2024

Universidade Federal do Maranhão, Hepatopancreatobiliary and Liver Transplant Unit, Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery - São Luis (MA), Brazil.

Background: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) was considered a contraindication for liver transplantation. However, recent studies have shown that highly selected cases of patients with a good response to neoadjuvant therapy may achieve acceptable survival rates when following liver transplantation.

Aims: To present two cases of patients with iCCA, without extrahepatic disease, who underwent living donor liver transplantation after receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Interplay Between Western Diet and Mammary Cancer: Data from a Chemically-induced Model in Wistar Rats.

Anticancer Res

November 2024

Centre for the Research and Technology of Agro-Environmental and Biological Sciences (CITAB), University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), Vila Real, Portugal.

Background/aim: This study aimed to investigate the influence of Western diet on mammary cancer in Wistar female rats, focusing on systemic responses and tumor development.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-eight Wistar female rats were acclimatized and divided into four experimental groups (n=7 each): Western diet (WD), Western diet with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) administration (WD+MNU), standard diet (CTR), and standard diet with MNU administration (CTR+MNU). MNU was administered intraperitoneally at 50 mg/kg at seven weeks of age to induce mammary cancer.

Co-occurrence of oral pemphigus vulgaris and herpes simplex virus infection in a young patient with Crohn's disease: report of a rare case of oral lesions during anti-TFN alpha and immunomodulator therapy.

Int J Colorectal Dis

August 2024

Postgraduate Program in Pathology, School of Medicine, Hospital Universitário Antônio Pedro, Empresa Brasileira de Serviços Hospitalares, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Av. Marquês Do Paraná, 303, 4O Andar, Sala 18Zip Code, Centro, Niterói, RJ, 24033-900, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a serious autoimmune disease affecting the skin and mucous membranes, often mimicking other oral diseases, making diagnosis difficult; it's rare for PV to co-occur with Crohn's disease, especially in younger patients.
  • The main treatments typically involve systemic corticosteroids along with immunosuppressants, but medications like TNF-alpha inhibitors can potentially trigger other autoimmune conditions.
  • A case study details a young woman with Crohn's, treated with infliximab, who developed PV, leading to subsequent oral lesions and requiring a variety of treatments including corticosteroids, antiviral medications, and methotrexate for management.*

Article Synopsis
  • There is growing interest in using dietary changes, specifically a diet rich in propionate, to influence autoimmune diseases due to its connection with gut health.
  • The study focused on the effects of feeding propionylated high-amylose resistant starches (HAMSP) to mice with primary biliary cholangitis, assessing immune response and liver health through various biological analyses.
  • The findings reveal that long-term HAMSP intake shifted T-cell populations and caused liver fat accumulation (hepatocellular steatosis), highlighting the complex relationship between diet and autoimmune conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Acetamiprid (ACDP) is a neonicotinoid insecticide effective in controlling fleas but has significant toxic effects on health, particularly on blood and organ function.
  • The study involved dividing 40 rats into four groups to assess the toxicological impacts of ACDP and the protective role of cinnamon nanoemulsions (CMNEs) over 28 days.
  • Results indicated that ACDP increased white blood cell counts while reducing red blood cells and overall body weight, but CMNEs helped restore these blood parameters and protected the liver from damage caused by ACDP.
