Negative symptoms of schizophrenia represent, at the present stage of their study, a certain group of mental pathology. They include motivation disorders or volitional disorders (anhedonia, abulia, asociality) and disorders of reduced expression or emotional disorders (alogia/poverty of speech and emotional decline/flattening). Negative symptoms are key disorders in schizophrenia, often appear at the pre-manifest stage of the disease, and significantly affect the prognosis and response to therapy.

Emotional deprivation can lead to growth faltering of infants and children. The mechanism(s) involved differ in that for infants, the major metabolic problem is inadequate energy intake for growth. In young children, it is likely that the emotional deprivation causes a syndrome not only of growth faltering, but with bizarre behaviors, especially with regard to food: hoarding, gorging and vomiting, hyperphagia, drinking from the toilet, and eating from garbage pails.

Phenomenon of hospitalism in elderly patients with mental disorders is an extremely important clinical, social and economic problem. 155 patients of the gerontopsychiatric hospital were examined, 75 of them showed signs of hospitalism, and 80 made up a control group. A subgroup of patients with signs and short duration of the disease was isolated, the duration of treatment in the hospital of these patients was 133,5±42,24 days (in the corresponding control subgroup 72,11±37,11 days, p<0,05).

The new technology of hospital psychiatric care, developed and implemented in the Mordovia republican clinical hospital, permits resolving problems of hospitalism, lethality, pharmaceutical resistance and others. The essence of this technology is in staging of hospital care under condition of intensification and standardization of curative diagnostic process, implementation of complex approach to treatment of psychiatric disorders. The patient sequentially passes through three stages: intensive diagnostics and intensive treatment (intensive care department, intensive therapy department), supportive therapy (general psychiatric department); rehabilitation measures (curative rehabilitative department).
