Mice immunized with a combination of dextran B1355 in adjuvant followed by three injections of 2 x 10(9) Escherichia coli B organisms produced an average of 14.5 mg/ml of anti-dextran antibodies. It was demonstrated that the stimulating effect of E. coli B was due to antigenic determinants cross-reactive with B1355 and not solely because of adjuvant properties of the organism. The anti-dextran antibodies were distributed among both 7S and 19S components. Isoelectric focusing of the 7S antibodies showed several spectrotypes of antibody, most of which were shared by the majority of the individual sera. The limited spectrotypic heterogeneity of the 7S antibodies was supported by idiotypic studies. Thus, a heterologous, anti-idiotypic serum, rabbit anti-M104, was prepared which distinguished between two closely related myeloma proteins, M104 and J558,with specificity for alpha-(1 leads to 3) dextran. This antiserum demonstrated that some, but not all, of the 7S and 19S anti-dextran antibodies possessed variable region determinants cross-reactive with M104.

Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are of widespread interest as fluorescent labels for bioanalysis and imaging applications. Single-particle measurements have proven to be a very powerful tool for better understanding the fundamental properties and behaviors of QDs and their bioconjugates; however, a recurring challenge is the immobilization of QDs in a solution-like environment that minimizes interactions with a bulk surface. Immobilization strategies for QD-peptide conjugates are particularly underdeveloped within this context.

Ampelozizyphus amazonicus Ducke is a medicinal plant used in the Amazon region to prepare a drink with tonic, immunomodulatory and adaptogenic properties. Due to the growing interest in dietary supplements with these properties and, to provide a new functional ingredient, barks from A. amazonicus were extracted.

Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae is a mucosal respiratory pathogen causing contagious porcine pleuropneumonia. Pathogenesis studies have demonstrated a major role for the capsule, exotoxins and outer membrane proteins. Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae can also glycosylate proteins, using a cytoplasmic N-linked glycosylating enzyme designated NGT, but its transcriptional arrangement and role in virulence remains unknown.

Intravenous iron preparations are typically classified as non-dextran-based or dextran/dextran-based complexes. The carbohydrate shell for each of these preparations is unique and is key in determining the various physicochemical properties, the metabolic pathway, and the immunogenicity of the iron-carbohydrate complex. As intravenous dextran can cause severe, antibody-mediated dextran-induced anaphylactic reactions (DIAR), the purpose of this study was to explore the potential of various intravenous iron preparations, non-dextran-based or dextran/dextran-based, to induce these reactions.

No methods are currently available for rapidly isolating gonadotrophs from the anterior pituitary (AP) in any species. We developed a method for preparing pure bovine gonadotrophs from a heterogeneous AP cell mixture by magnetic separation and our original antibody against the N terminus of bovine gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRHR). A bovine AP cell mixture was incubated with the anti-GnRHR antibody, anti-dextran antibody-conjugated secondary antibody and dextran-coated magnetic nanoparticles for magnetic isolation.
