Background: Haptoglobin (Hp) is an emerging diagnostic marker in cattle, and knowledge of suitable sample types and measurement methods is important.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to compare the results of a colorimetric assay (CA) and an ELISA for bovine Hp using serum, EDTA plasma, and lithium-heparinized (LH) plasma, respectively, and to assess the diagnostic potential for puerperal metritis.

Methods: In experiment 1, Hp was measured in pooled aliquots of serum (n = 10), EDTA plasma (n = 10), and LH plasma (n = 10) of 100 healthy fresh lactating dairy cows from 10 farms using both the CA and the ELISA.

Limited support for a direct connection between prebiotics and intestinal permeability - a systematic review.

Glycoconj J

October 2024

Department of Life Sciences and Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, Oslo Metropolitan University, St. Olavs Plass, P.O. Box 4, N-0130, Oslo, Norway.

Article Synopsis
  • The intestinal barrier serves as a crucial selective interface that separates the body's internal and external environments, and its compromise can lead to various health issues related to increased intestinal permeability (IP).
  • Numerous studies, primarily identified through PubMed and Trip, examined the effects of prebiotics on IP between 2010-2023, but only six relevant studies were found, and results varied widely in design and population.
  • Despite one study showing a significant positive effect of prebiotics on IP and some improvements in gut microbiota, there is a clear need for more comprehensive human studies with standardized methods to better understand the relationship between prebiotic interventions and IP.

The association between high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and breast cancer (BC) remains controversial due to the high complexity of the HDL particle and its functionality. The HDL proteome was determined in newly diagnosed BC classified according to the molecular type [luminal A or B (LA or LB), HER2, and triple-negative (TN)] and clinical stage of the disease. Women (n = 141) aged between 18 and 80 years with BC, treatment-naïve, and healthy women [n = 103; control group (CT)], matched by age and body mass index, were included.

Background: Reduction of inflammation and early detection of complications after surgical procedures are important objectives for proper veterinary practice. This study aimed to evaluate the differences between shelter and pet female cats in selected acute-phase parameters scheduled to ovariohysterectomy. Postoperative monitoring after ovariohysterectomy with the same laboratory parameters was performed in shelter cats, in which two different types of surgical sutures were used for the entire procedure.

Introduction: Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is characterized by progressive kidney injury accompanied by thrombotic microangiopathy, which is clinically defined as microangiopathic hemolytic anemia with thrombocytopenia and organ injury. Shiga toxin-producing (STEC)-HUS is caused by infection with pathogenic strains, typically O157, O26, and O111. However, the prevalence of other types of pathogenic has been increasing, and these pathogens sometimes cause atypical clinical manifestations of STEC-HUS.
