Metabolomics has been used extensively to capture the exposome. We investigated whether prospectively measured metabolites provided predictive power beyond well-established risk factors among 758 women with adjudicated cancers [ = 577 breast (BC) and = 181 colorectal (CRC)] and = 758 controls with available specimens (collected mean 7.2 years prior to diagnosis) in the Women's Health Initiative Bone Mineral Density subcohort.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of the "Zhibian (BL54) through Shuidao (ST28)" acupuncture technique on serum metabolite levels in rats with cyclophosphamide-induced premature ovarian insufficiency (POI).
  • By comparing hormone levels and ovarian tissue changes in acupuncture-treated and untreated POI rats, the researchers aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of this acupuncture method.
  • Results indicated that acupuncture significantly improved ovarian function by altering specific serum metabolites linked to reproductive hormone regulation and protective effects against cell damage, suggesting its potential for treating POI in clinical settings.

Bacteroidales reduces growth rate through serum metabolites and cytokines in Chinese Ningdu yellow chickens.

Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Poultry Genetic Improvement, Nanchang Normal University, Nanchang, Jiangxi 330032, China.

Increasing evidence has indicated that the gut microbiome plays an important role in chicken growth traits. However, the cecal microbial taxa associated with the growth rates of the Chinese Ningdu yellow chickens are unknown. In this study, shotgun metagenomic sequencing was used to identify cecal bacterial species associated with the growth rate of the Chinese Ningdu yellow chickens.

A highly sensitive colorimetric method (glycan-based nano(e)zyme) was developed for sensitive and rapid detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus based on N-acetyl neuraminic acid (sialic acid)-functionalized gold nanoparticles (SA-Au NZs). A number of techniques were used to characterize the prepared nanomaterials including XRD, FT-IR, UV-vis, DLS, and TEM. DLS analysis indicates an average hydrodynamic size of 34 nm, whereas TEM analysis indicates an average particle size of 15.

The complement system is the first line of innate immune defense against microbial infections. To survive in humans and cause infections, bacterial pathogens have developed sophisticated mechanisms to subvert the complement-mediated bactericidal activity. There are reports that sialidases, also known as neuraminidases, are implicated in bacterial complement resistance; however, its underlying molecular mechanism remains elusive.
