Mercury toxicity resulting from enzyme alterations- minireview.

Biometals

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX, USA.

Mercury is widely known for its detrimental effects on living organisms, whether in its elemental or bonded states. Recent comparative studies have shed light on the biochemical implications of mercury ingestion, both in low, persistent concentrations and in elevated acute dosages. Studies have presented models that elucidate how mercury disrupts healthy cells.

Protein prenylation in mechanotransduction: implications for disease and therapy.

Trends Pharmacol Sci

January 2025

Department of Cardiology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou 310003, China. Electronic address:

The process by which cells translate external mechanical cues into intracellular biochemical signals involves intricate mechanisms that remain unclear. In recent years, research into post-translational modifications (PTMs) has offered valuable insights into this field, spotlighting protein prenylation as a crucial mechanism in cellular mechanotransduction and various human diseases. Protein prenylation, which involves the covalent attachment of isoprenoid groups to specific substrate proteins, profoundly affects the functions of key mechanotransduction proteins such as Rho, Ras, and lamins.

Unlabelled: Remote polar regions offer unique opportunities and significant challenges for antimicrobial resistance research in a near-pristine environment. While core microbiology techniques continue to have an important role in supporting environmental research, the severe cold climate presents considerable challenges to laboratory research. We explore adaptations required for core bacteriology investigations in polar regions on an unsupported remote expedition c.

Low-carbon fuels, emitting less carbon than fossil fuels, are proposed to help in the transition to a sustainable, decarbonized transport sector. The new biofuels being studied and developed in this context include hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO). Its chemical composition, which is the same as fossil diesel (primarily composed of linear chain hydrocarbons C12-C24), makes HVO (more homogeneous mixtures of paraffinic hydrocarbons C10-C20, containing no sulfur or aromatics) a fuel with slightly lower density than fossil diesel due to these characteristics.
