Tropical Cyclones (TCs) are devastating natural disasters. Analyzing four decades of global TC data, here we find that among all global TC-active basins, the South China Sea (SCS) stands out as particularly difficult ocean for TCs to intensify, despite favorable atmosphere and ocean conditions. Over the SCS, TC intensification rate and its probability for a rapid intensification (intensification by ≥ 15.

Chiral metamaterials have received significant attention due to their strong chiroptical interactions with electromagnetic waves of incident light. However, the fabrication of large-area, hierarchically manufactured chiral plasmonic structures with high dissymmetry factors (g-factors) over a wide spectral range remains the key barrier to practical applications. Here we report a facile yet efficient method to fabricate hierarchical chiral nanostructures over a large area (>11.

The development of chiral metasurfaces with spin-selective reflection or transmission provides a new way to control the circularly polarized (CP) waves. However, it is still a great challenge to independently manipulate the polarization, frequency, and phase of the spin-selective reflected waves in different operating bands, which may have potential applications in improving the data capacity of microwave and optical communication systems. Here, a dual-band chiral metasurface is proposed to generate gigantic intrinsic chirality with strong circular dichroism (CD) in two different frequency bands by piecing two typical mono-chiral units together.

This paper examines a new technique to improve the figure of merit of laterally vibrating RF-MEMS resonators through an energy-preserving suspended addendum frame structure using finite element analysis. The proposed suspended addendum frame on the sides of the resonant plate helps as a mechanical vibration isolator from the supporting substrate. This enables the resonator to have a low acoustic energy loss, resulting in a higher quality factor.

A chemical synapse is either an action potential (AP) synapse or a graded potential (GP) synapse but not both. This study investigated how signals passed the glutamatergic synapse between the rod photoreceptor and its postsynaptic hyperpolarizing bipolar cells (HBCs) and light responses of retinal neurons with dual-cell and single-cell patch-clamp recording techniques. The results showed that scotopic lights evoked GPs in rods, whose depolarizing Phase 3 associated with the light offset also evoked APs of a duration of 241.
