The evolution of radiation therapy in Uganda has been a journey marked by significant milestones and persistent challenges. Since the inception of radiotherapy services in 1988-1989, there has been a concerted effort to enhance cancer treatment services. The early years were characterized by foundational developments, such as the installation of the first teletherapy units, low-dose-rate brachytherapy units, and conventional simulators, and the recognition of radiation oncologists and medical physicist professionals laid the groundwork for radiotherapy treatment modalities.

Stem cell-based therapies have raised considerable interest to develop regenerative treatment for neurological disorders with high disability. In this review, we focus on recent preclinical and clinical evidence of stem cell therapy in the treatment of degenerative neurological diseases and discuss different cell types, delivery routes and biodistribution of stem cell therapy. In addition, recent advances of mechanistic insights of stem cell therapy, including functional replacement by exogenous cells, immunomodulation and paracrine effects of stem cell therapies are also demonstrated.

Accurate Physics-Based Prediction of Binding Affinities of RNA- and DNA-Targeting Ligands.

J Chem Inf Model

January 2025

Schrödinger Incorporated, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02142, United States.

Article Synopsis
  • Predicting how well ligands bind to nucleic acids is challenging, which limits the development of small-molecule drugs for diseases like cancer and infections.
  • Recent advancements in computational methods, particularly free-energy perturbation (FEP), have improved predictions for protein-ligand binding affinities, but its effectiveness for nucleic acids was unclear.
  • This study found that using FEP+ software with the OPLS4 force field can accurately predict binding energies for over 100 ligands interacting with DNA/RNA, achieving predictions that closely match experimental data and could aid drug discovery.

Nasal high flow (NHF) therapy is an established form of non invasive respiratory support used in acute and chronic care. Recently, a new high flow nasal cannula with asymmetric prongs was approved for clinical use. The clinical benefits of the new cannula have not yet been defined and no evidence are available on the use of asymmetric NHF support in patient with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Retrosynthesis is a strategy to analyze the synthetic routes for target molecules in medicinal chemistry. However, traditional retrosynthesis predictions performed by chemists and rule-based expert systems struggle to adapt to the vast chemical space of real-world scenarios. Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized retrosynthesis prediction in recent decades, significantly increasing the accuracy and diversity of predictions for target compounds.
