Osteocytes are mechanosensitive, bone-embedded cells which are connected via dendrites in a lacuno-canalicular network and regulate bone resorption and formation balance. Alterations in osteocyte lacunar volume, shape and density have been identified in conditions of aging, osteoporosis and osteolytic bone metastasis, indicating patterns of impaired bone remodeling, osteolysis and disease progression. Osteolytic bone disease is a hallmark of the hematologic malignancy multiple myeloma (MM), in which monoclonal plasma cells in the bone marrow disrupt the bone homeostasis and induce excessive resorption at local and distant sites.

Cutaneous plasmacytoma with Mott cell differentiation in a dog.

J Vet Diagn Invest

July 2024

Veterinary Diagnostic & Production Animal Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State University, Ames, IA, USA.

Cytologic evaluation of aspirate slides from a small, <1-cm, interdigital mass on a 9-y-old, spayed female Yorkshire Terrier revealed a proliferation of discrete, round cells containing few-to-many, variably sized, round, eosinophilic, cytoplasmic inclusions. The top differentials based on the cytologic findings were either a plasma cell tumor or a B-cell lymphoma with Mott cell differentiation. The unencapsulated, well-demarcated, multilobulated round-cell neoplasm was completely excised.

Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. Electronic address:

Monoclonal immunoglobulin (MIg) crystalline nephropathies are rare lesions resulting from precipitation of MIgs in the kidney as intracellular or extracellular crystals. We describe a patient with multiple myeloma (IgGλ) and diabetes who presented with nephrotic range proteinuria. Kidney biopsy revealed membranous nephropathy superimposed on diabetic glomerulosclerosis.
