Degradation products of magnesium implant synergistically enhance bone regeneration: Unraveling the roles of hydrogen gas and alkaline environment.

Bioact Mater

April 2025

Musculoskeletal Research Laboratory of Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology, Innovative Orthopaedic Biomaterial and Drug Translational Research Laboratory, Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China.

Biodegradable magnesium (Mg) implant generally provides temporary fracture fixation and facilitates bone regeneration. However, the exact effects of generated Mg ions (Mg), hydrogen gas (H), and hydroxide ions (OH) by Mg degradation on enhancing fracture healing are not fully understood. Here we investigate the degradation of Mg intramedullary nail (Mg-IMN), revealing the generation of these degradation products around the fracture site during early stages.

Controlled Nutrient Delivery to Pancreatic Islets Using Polydopamine-Coated Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles.

Nano Lett

January 2025

Department of Radiology, Interventional Radiology Innovation at Stanford (IRIS), Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto, California 94304, United States.

In this study, we designed a nanoscale platform for sustained amino acid delivery to support transplanted pancreatic islets. The platform features mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) loaded with glutamine (G), an essential amino acid required for islet survival and function, and coated with polydopamine (PD). We investigated various PD concentrations (0.

Recurrent activity propagates through labile ensembles in macaque dorsolateral prefrontal microcircuits.

Department of Pharmacology, Vanderbilt Brain Institute, Vanderbilt Center for Addiction Research, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN 37232, USA; Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology, & Physiology, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN 46202, USA. Electronic address:

Human and non-human primate studies clearly implicate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) as critical for advanced cognitive functions. It is thought that intracortical synaptic architectures within the dlPFC are the integral neurobiological substrate that gives rise to these processes. In the prevailing model, each cortical column makes up one fundamental processing unit composed of dense intrinsic connectivity, conceptualized as the "canonical" cortical microcircuit.

In clinics, physical injuries to the spinal cord cause a temporary motor areflexia below lesion, known as spinal shock. This topic is still underexplored due to the lack of preclinical spinal cord injury (SCI) models that do not use anesthesia, which would affect spinal excitability. Our innovative design considered a custom-made micro impactor that provides localized and calibrated strikes to the ventral surface of the thoracic spinal cord of the entire CNS isolated from neonatal rats.

Background: This manuscript presents the challenges of treating various forms of headaches and the potential of interventional techniques targeting the greater occipital nerve (GON) to alleviate the burden on patients. Occipital neuralgia, characterized by stabbing or shooting pain in the base of the skull, is often associated with primary, cervicogenic, or migraine headaches. While occipital nerve blocks offer temporary relief, durable treatment options are limited.
