Article Synopsis
  • A 7-year-old girl with a history of headaches experienced unusual neurological symptoms after episodes of hyperventilation, including aphasia and weakness on one side of her body.
  • Despite her family history of migraines and seizures, her neurologic exam remained normal, but EEG tests showed abnormal brain wave patterns linked to her symptoms.
  • The case suggests an important link between hyperventilation and rare cerebrovascular disorders, emphasizing the need for thorough EEG analysis in diagnosing such conditions.

We hypothesize that upright cognitive impairment in patients with postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is caused by reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF). The CBF velocity (CBF(v)) measured by transcranial Doppler ultrasound decreased excessively during 70° tilt in a minority of patients with intermittent hyperpnea/hypocapnia. Incremental tilt showed no difference in mean CBF(v).

Objective: We studied the changes in Polysomnographic (PSG) profile in drug-naïve patients of Parkinson's disease (PD) who underwent evaluation with sleep overnight PSG.

Materials And Methods: This prospective study included 30 with newly diagnosed levodopa-naïve patients with PD, fulfilling the UK-PD society brain bank clinical diagnostic criteria (M:F = 25:5; age: 57.2 ± 10.

Experimentally induced pain can be attenuated by concomitant heterotopic nociceptive stimuli (counterirritation). Animal data indicate that this stems from supraspinal "diffuse noxious inhibitory controls" (DNICs) triggered by C and Aδ fibers. In humans, only noxious stimuli induce counterirritation.

The effects of hyperpnea on exhaled nitric oxide synthesis in normal subjects.

Chest

November 2005

Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine, MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland, OH 44109, USA.

Study Objectives: To determine if the concentration of nitric oxide (NO) in the lungs increases with hyperpnea by contrasting calculated production (ie, the product of the fractional expired NO concentration [FeNO] and minute ventilation [Ve]) [Vno] with the amount of NO in equilibrium with the conducting airways (eNOair) and the amount of NO diffusing from the alveoli (eNOalv).

Design: Observational study.

Setting: University teaching hospital.
