Mutalomycin is a new metal-complexing polyether antibiotic produced by a strain of Streptomyces mutabilis NRRL 8088. The metabolite, a monocarboxylic acid, was isolated as the sodium salt C41H69NaO12. The structure of this polyether was established by X-ray analysis of its potassium salt C41H69KO12. Mutalomycin contains six heterocyclic rings and is structurally related to nigericin. The metabolite is active against gram-positive bacteria and Eimeria tenella (chicken coccidiosis).

Introduction: Intensive research is dedicated to the development of novel biomaterials and medical devices to be used as grafts in reconstructive surgery, with the purpose of enhancing their therapeutic effectiveness, safety, and durability. A variety of biomaterials, from autologous bone to polymethylmetacrylate, polyether ether ketone, titanium, and calcium-based ceramics are used in cranioplasty. Porous hydroxyapatite (PHA) is reported as a possible material for bone reconstruction, with good signs of biocompatibility, osteoconductive and osteointegrative properties.

From Pseudocyclic to Macrocyclic Ionophores: Strategies toward the Synthesis of Cyclic Monensin Derivatives.

There has been a long search for a simple preparation of new cyclic analogues of ionophore antibiotics. We report a simple and general synthesis of three new cyclic derivatives of polyether ionophore, monensin A (MON). The application of the Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azides and terminal alkynes to macrocyclization results in a concise, synthetic route to monensin lacton or lactam in only 4 steps.

This report documents complications in false pilchard Harengula clupeola and scad Decapterus macarellus associated with a salinomycin (60 mg kg-1) and amprolium (100 mg kg-1) gel feed treatment, along with prolonged temperature increase, for an Enteromyxum leei outbreak in a salt water, mixed species, public aquarium exhibit. Shortly after administration, a mass mortality event ensued where hundreds of false pilchards and a few scad died. Medicated gel feed was noted within the gastrointestinal tracts of all affected fish.

Two Disaccharide-Bearing Polyethers, K-41B and K-41Bm, Potently Inhibit HIV-1 via Mechanisms Different from That of Their Precursor Polyether, K-41A.

The screening of novel antiviral agents from marine microorganisms is an important strategy for new drug development. Our previous study found that polyether K-41A and its analog K-41Am, derived from a marine Streptomyces strain, exhibit anti-HIV activity by suppressing the activities of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) and its integrase (IN). Among the K-41A derivatives, two disaccharide-bearing polyethers-K-41B and K-41Bm-were found to have potent anti-HIV-1 activity in vitro.

Salinomycin is a polyether ionophore widely used for the treatment of coccidiosis in poultry. However, the emergence of coccidia strains resistant to salinomycin presents challenges for control efforts, and the mechanisms underlying this resistance in Eimeria remain inadequately understood. In this study, 78 stable salinomycin-resistant strains were generated through experimental evolution approaches.
