Background: Recent studies have shown that ferroptosis, a newly identified regulated cell death characterized by increased lipid peroxidation and accumulation of toxic lipid peroxides, is closely related to the pathophysiological processes of nervous system diseases which can be inhibited with iron chelators, lipophilic antioxidants, and lipid peroxidation inhibitors.

Objective: To review the current evidence on the efficacy of various natural polyphenols in nervous system injury.

Methods: The data selected for this review were collected by searching the MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar database for articles published in English between 2000 and 2024 using the following terms: cell death, regulated cell death, ferroptosis, lipid peroxides, iron, and glutathione peroxidase.

Herein, a simple ambient conditioned sunlight promoted photochemical reduction reaction is demonstrated for the of nitrate (NO) conversion to ammonia (NH) with the maximum conversion yield of ∼16 mM using iron filings (f-Fe) in the presence of HO. Based on a radical scavenging study of reactive species and the characterization of catalyst f-Fe before and after the reaction, a plausible mechanism has been proposed for the ambient conditioned synthesis of NH. The results associated with the NH synthesis have been verified using the N isotopic labeled nitrate (NO), which supports the simpler viability of the reported procedure.

Metal ion transport in maize: survival in a variable stress environment.

J Genet Genomics

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Plant Environmental Resilience, College of Biological Sciences, China Agricultural University, Beijing 100193, China. Electronic address:

Maize (Zea mays) is the most widely cultivated crop in the world. Maize production is closely linked to the extensive uptake and utilization of various mineral nutrients. Potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) are essential metallic macronutrients for plant growth and development.

A mechanistic insight into whey protein isolate (WPI) fibrillation driven by divalent cations.

Food Chem

January 2025

Department of Food Science and Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Azadi Sq., Mashhad, Khorasan Razavi P.O. Box 9177948944, Iran. Electronic address:

Protein fibrillation complex mechanisms led to an emerging trend in research for years. The mechanisms behind whey protein isolate (WPI) fibrillation driven by divalent cations remained still a matter of speculation. All cations (Ca, Fe, Mg, and Zn) enhanced the microenvironment polarity through π-π stacking, and the amide I and II shifts confirmed the fibrillation.

Mitochondrial Mayhem: How cigarette smoke induces placental dysfunction through MMS19 degradation.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University, Shenyang 110004, PR China. Electronic address:

Cigarette smoke (CS) has detrimental effects on placental growth and embryo development, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the impact of CS on trophoblast cell proliferation and regulated cell death (RCD) by examining its interference with iron-sulfur cluster (ISC) proteins and the CIA pathway. Exposure to CS disrupted the cytosolic ISC assembly (CIA) pathway, downregulated ISC proteins, and decreased ISC maturation in the placenta of rats exposed to passive smoking.
