Anti-Hyperlipidemic, Antioxidant, Anti-Inflammatory and Antidiabetic Effect of Brucine Against Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Nephropathy in Rats.

J Biochem Mol Toxicol

January 2025

Department of General Medicine, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xinjiang Hospital, Urumqi, China.

Among the diabetes-related complications, diabetic nephropathy is the major complication and it leads to end-stage renal failure. In the current investigation, we examined the protection of brucine, an alkaloid extracted from the seeds of Strychnos nux vomica plant widely used in traditional Chinese and Indian medicines against diabetic-induced nephropathy. Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control, diabetic rats, diabetic-induced + 40 mg/kg brucine-treated rats, and diabetic-induced + 25 mg/kg metformin-treated rats.

This study utilized ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) to rapidly analyze and identify the chemical constituents in five processed products of Strychni Semen(raw, sand-roasted, fried, urine-soaked, and vinegar-processed products). Using PeakView software to extract compound information, 50 chemical components were identified based on retention time, accurate molecular ion peaks, secondary mass spectrometry data, and comparison with reference standards and relevant literature. Specifically, 41 components were identified in raw Strychni Semen, 48 in sand-roasted, 43 in fried, 41 in urine-soaked, and 40 in vinegar-processed products.

Introduction: Huangma Tincture (HMT) is a Chinese patent medicine with a history of clinical use for more than 60 years, widely used for treating dermal chronic ulcer such as diabetic foot ulcer. However, the overall quality evaluation and control method of HMT has not yet been researched.

Objective: The aim of this study is to establish a comprehensive quality evaluation and control method for HMT based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprint, chemometrics, and multicomponent content determination.

Antiepileptic profile of Parawixin-11, purified from Parawixia bistriata spider venom (Araneae, Araneidae), in Wistar rats.

Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol

July 2024

Neurobiology and Venoms Laboratory, Department of Biology, College of Philosophy, Sciences and Literature (FFCLRP), University of São Paulo (USP), Av. Bandeirantes, 3900, Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, CEP: 14040-090, Brazil.

The pharmacological treatment of epilepsy is often complex due to the lack of efficacy in many patients and profound side effects from current drugs, including sedation, motor impairment, and teratogenesis. In the quest for new antiepileptic drugs, animal venoms offer a valuable source of neuroactive molecules targeting ion channels and neurotransmitter receptors. This study investigates the antiepileptic potential of compounds isolated from the venom of the Parawixia bistriata spider.
