A method for urgent histocytological examination of the internal organs at autopsies and urgent biopsies is offered which is a useful addition to the routine histological examination. The method is based on the preparation of an emulsion from the organ tissue, staining it without preliminary fixation, and examination after pressing with a cover slip or in dried smears after poststaining. This method of specimen treatment is simple, time-saving, needs no freezing microtome. Preparations can be made in 3-5 minutes.

Diagnostic Performance of Point Shear Wave Elastography Using Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse Technology in Peripheral Pulmonary Consolidations: A Feasibility Study.

Ultrasound Med Biol

May 2022

Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Metabolism and Clinical Infectiology, University Hospital Giessen and Marburg, Philipp University of Marburg, Baldingerstraße, Marburg, Germany; Interdisciplinary Center of Ultrasound Diagnostics, University Hospital Giessen and Marburg, Philipp University of Marburg, Baldingerstrße Marburg, Germany. Electronic address:

The aim of the study described here was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of lung ultrasound point shear wave elastography using acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) in peripheral pulmonary consolidations (PPCs). A total of 87 patients with PPCs diagnosed from April to December 2020 were included retrospectively in the study. The inclusion criteria were (i) a PPC >1 cm; (ii) valid ARFI measurements; and (iii) confirmation of the diagnosis of a PPC by histocytological examination and/or clinical and radiological follow-up.

Background And Aims: Endoscopic resection has been established as curative therapy for superficial cancer arising from Barrett's oesophagus (BE); recurrences are very rare. Based on a case series with unusual and massive early recurrences, we analyse the issue of tumour cell reimplantation.

Methods: This hypothesis was developed on the basis of two out of seven patients treated by circumferential (n=6) or nearly circumferential (n=1) en bloc and R0 endoscopic resection of T1 neoplastic BE.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess whether the reliability of Touch Imprinting Cytology (TIC) of Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in skin melanoma patients allows intraoperative decisions regarding simultaneous radical lymphadenectomy to be made. Previous experiences have shown that the limit of TIC in extemporaneous diagnosis was represented by the minimal deposits of the tumor. Many current data seem to show that in this situation radical lymphadenectomy is no longer necessary, so we wondered if TIC could regain importance in the intraoperative management of these patients.

Histological Examination of the Diabetic Kidney.

Methods Mol Biol

December 2020

Unit of Nephrology, Azienda Socio-Sanitaria Territoriale Papa Giovanni XXIII, Bergamo, Italy.

The increasing prevalence of diabetes worldwide has led to a concomitant rise in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) as a major cause of end-stage renal disease. Glomerular lesions constitute the most striking and consistent features identified in biopsies from patients with DKD, although tubulointerstitial injury has an important and often under-recognized role in the progression to overt nephropathy. In advanced stages of the disease, podocyte detachment is a pivotal event in the loss of glomerular filtration barrier integrity and may explain, at least in part, the inability of current therapies to halt renal function decline.

Method for the Rapid Fixation of Gastrointestinal Helminths in Small Mammals.

Acta Parasitol

June 2019

Department of Biology, Georgia Southern University, 4324 Old Register Rd., Statesboro, GA, 30460, USA.

Background: Despite being a significant element of biodiversity and playing an important role in their hosts' physiology, ecology and evolution, parasites remain understudied and are often neglected during biotic surveys and other collection efforts. More often than not, it is due to the perception that parasitological examination requires specialized expertise and substantial additional time to perform.

Results: Herein, we provide an express method for recovery and fixation of endoparasites from the gastrointestinal tract of small mammals that can be used by both parasitologists and vertebrate biologists in either field or laboratory conditions.
