Controls on organic carbon preservation in marine sediments remain controversial but crucial for understanding past and future climate dynamics. Here we develop a conceptual-mathematical model to determine the key processes for the preservation of organic carbon. The model considers the major processes involved in the breakdown of organic carbon, including dissolved organic carbon hydrolysis, mixing, remineralization, mineral sorption and molecular transformation.

Continuously flowing wastewater-treatment processes can be configured for biological and physical selection to form and retain large biological aggregates (LBAs), along with suspended biomass that contains ordinary biological flocs and biomass that has detached from the LBAs. Suspended biomass and LBAs have different solids residence times (SRTs) and mass-transport resistances. Here, mathematical sub-models that describe metabolic processes, a 1-D biofilm, and spherical carriers that can migrate throughout a wastewater-treatment process were combined to simulate a full-scale demonstration train having anaerobic, anoxic, and oxic zones, as well as side-stream enhanced biological phosphorus removal.

This study characterized a novel bacterial lipase with high biotechnological potential, focusing on industrial and environmental applications. Bacterial isolates were screened using olive oil as a substrate, and the strain with the highest hydrolytic halo was identified as Burkholderia sp. via 16S rRNA analysis.

The hydrolysis of proteins by proteases (proteolysis) plays a significant role in biology and food science. Despite the importance of proteolysis, a universal quantitative model of this phenomenon has not yet been created. This review considers approaches to modeling proteolysis in a batch reactor that take into account differences in the hydrolysis of the individual peptide bonds, as well as the limited accessibility (masking) for the enzymes of some hydrolysis sites in the protein substrate.
