Immunoassay is a diagnostic tool based on the specific binding of antibodies and antigens with widespread applications. Nonetheless, several research obstacles, like poor specific antibodies, the poisonous reagents and unstable results, still remain challenges. Herein, we innovatively reported a colorimetric and fluorescent dual-mode immunoassay based on the bifunctional nanobody for SEA detection.

Article Synopsis
  • * Biological tests demonstrated that the extract can reduce venom-induced neuromuscular blockade when applied before exposure, but not after, suggesting timing is crucial for effectiveness.
  • * While quinine was not found in the extract, the presence of coumarin derivatives and other unknown alkaloids may contribute to the extract's ability to mitigate the effects of the venom.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy consists of breathing 100% oxygen continuously or intermittently in a chamber at a pressure equal to or greater than 1.4 absolute atmospheres. Indicated for the emergency treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning and other medical-surgical pathologies such as gas embolism or necrotizing soft-tissue infections, various studies have shown a beneficial effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in certain ocular pathologies, notably of microcirculatory origin, such as central retinal artery occlusion or macular edema linked to retinal vein occlusions.

Pernicious Plasmodium vivax as a Historical Cause of Malarial Cachexia?

Am J Trop Med Hyg

June 2023

Australian Defence Force Malaria and Infectious Disease Institute, Enoggera, Queensland, Australia; University of Queensland, School of Public Health, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

Prior to the understanding of malaria as a parasitic disease, malaria cachexia was a loosely defined syndrome consisting of severe anemia and splenomegaly in a chronically wasted individual living in a malarious area. Entire rural populations in diverse areas such as the Thames estuary, Marseilles marshes, and the Mississippi valley were said to have cachexia on the basis of chronic malaria "poisoning," which accounted for their poor socioeconomic health. Malaria cachexia appeared to disappear as the marshes were drained, agriculture improved, and quinine or iron treatments were administered.
