The endocannabinoid system (ECS), regulating such processes as energy homeostasis, inflammation, and muscle function, centers around cannabinoid receptors, including CB1. These receptors are mainly located in the central nervous system and skeletal muscles. Hyperactivity of CB1 receptors is linked to metabolic disorders and chronic inflammation, highlighting their potential as therapeutic targets for muscle hypertrophy and metabolic health.

Melanocortin 5 receptor signaling protects against podocyte injury in proteinuric glomerulopathies.

Kidney Int

January 2025

Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, University of Toledo College of Medicine, Toledo, Ohio, USA; Division of Kidney Disease and Hypertension, Rhode Island Hospital, the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA. Electronic address:

Melanocortin therapeutics, exemplified by adrenocorticotropic hormone, have a proven steroidogenic-independent anti-proteinuric and glomerular protective effect. The biological functions of melanocortins are mediated by melanocortin receptors (MCR), including MC1R, which recent studies have shown to protect against glomerular disease. However, the role of other MCRs like MC5R is unknown.

Changes in Locomotor Activity Observed During Acute Nicotine Withdrawal Can Be Attenuated by Ghrelin and GHRP-6 in Rats.

Biomedicines

January 2025

Department of Pathophysiology, Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical School, University of Szeged, Szőkefalvi-Nagy Béla str. 6., 6720 Szeged, Hungary.

Ghrelin and growth hormone-releasing peptide 6 (GHRP-6) are peptides which can stimulate GH release, acting through the same receptor. Ghrelin and its receptor have been involved in reward sensation and addiction induced by natural and artificial drugs, including nicotine. The present study aimed to investigate the impacts of ghrelin and GHRP-6 on the horizontal and vertical activity in rats exposed to chronic nicotine treatment followed by acute nicotine withdrawal.

Marked Gingival Overgrowth Protruding from the Oral Cavity Due to Sodium Valproate.

Diagnostics (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Pediatrics, Graduate School of Medicine, Chiba University, 1-8-1 Inohana, Chuo-ku, Chiba-shi 260-8670, Chiba, Japan.

Drug-induced gingival overgrowth is associated with various systemic diseases, including epilepsy. Among antiepileptic medications, phenytoin is commonly reported to cause this condition. In contrast, sodium valproate (VPA), another widely used antiepileptic drug, rarely induces gingival overgrowth.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a debilitating disorder that can lead to life-long disability, with a high incidence in Saudi Arabia. Secondary epilepsy and cardiac complications are common in CP patients. We present a rare case of a 17-year-old female with CP, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), secondary epilepsy, and a history of post-cardiac arrest, with home medications carbamazepine, risperidone, and sodium valproate.
