One-Pot Enzymatic Cascade for Toxicant Degradation and Sugar Acid Production.

Chembiochem

December 2024

School of Biomolecular Science and Engineering, Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology, (VISTEC), 555 Wangchan Valley, Rayong, 21210, Thailand.

Article Synopsis
  • This study presents a new one-pot enzymatic cascade method that converts toxic substances into a useful electron acceptor to produce sugar acids, addressing pesticide toxicity and environmental concerns.
  • The process utilizes organophosphate hydrolase (OPD) to break down pesticides into 4-nitrophenol, which is further transformed into 1,4-benzoquinone, acting as an electron acceptor for catalyzing sugar acid formation.
  • The method results in a higher yield (up to 10%) compared to traditional techniques and produces valuable compounds like xylonic acid and lactobionic acid, which have significant industrial applications and beneficial properties.

September 2024

Molecular Microbiology & Bioenergetics, Institute of Molecular Biosciences, Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany.

Species of the genus Blautia are not only abundant in the human gut but also contribute to human well-being. Our study demonstrates that the gut acetogen Blautia schinkii can grow on myo-inositol. We identified the pathway of myo-inositol degradation through a combination of physiological and biochemical studies, genome-wide expression profiling and homology searches.

Identifying genomic markers for phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) is vital for advancing agricultural sustainability. This study utilizes whole-genome sequencing and comprehensive bioinformatics analysis, examining the genomes of 76 PSB strains with the aid of specialized genomic databases and analytical tools. We have identified the pqq gene cluster, particularly the pqqC gene, as a key marker for (P) solubilization capabilities.
