Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated concerns about whether COVID-19 vaccines are linked to thrombosis (blood clots) in patients with coronary atherosclerosis and in atherosclerotic mice.
  • Researchers found no significant difference in thrombus formation or platelet activation between vaccinated and unvaccinated groups of both mice and CAD patients after vaccination.
  • The results suggest that inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccines do not increase the risk of thrombosis or activate platelets any more than saline treatments, indicating they might be safer compared to adenovirus-based vaccines.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cerebrovascular disease (CBVD) are common diseases in middle-aged and elderly people with high morbidity, mortality and disability rates. Individualized assessment and treatment are helpful to improve the quality of life and prognosis of patients. Thrombelastography (TEG) is a method to evaluate the coagulation function of patient with whole blood.

Usefulness of the thromboelastogram in children: correlation with habitual coagulation tests.

Rev Chil Pediatr

December 2019

Departamento de Pediatría, División de Pediatría, Facultad de Medicina, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile.

Introduction: Usual coagulation tests partially evaluate different elements of hemostasis, and do not translate cell interactions, which is an especially sensitive issue in critically ill patients. Viscoelastic measurement techniques, such as thromboelastogram (TEG) show the complete coagulation pro cess and are being evaluated as global coagulation tests.

Objective: To determine the correlation of the usual coagulation tests with the TEG values, in children treated in an intensive care unit (ICU).

Ovines are a common animal model for the study of cardiovascular devices, where consideration of blood biocompatibility is an essential design criterion. In the ovine model, tools to assess blood biocompatibility are limited and continued investigation to identify and apply additional assays is merited. Toward this end, the thrombelastograph, clinically utilized to assess hemostasis, was used to characterize normal ovine parameters.
