Analogues of d-glucose modified at C-3, and in some cases at a second position, were prepared and tested for active accumulation by everted segments of hamster intestine. Their relative affinity for the sugar carrier was measured by tissue/medium ratio, Michaelis-Menten kinetics and competitive inhibition of d-galactose or methyl alpha-d-glucoside transport. d-Glucose and its 3-deoxy-3-fluoro, 3-chloro-3-deoxy and to a smaller extent its 3-bromo-3-deoxy derivatives, bound and were transported more strongly than 3-deoxy-d-glucose and other sugars not containing an electronegative atom in the gluco configuration at C-3. 3-Deoxy-d-galactose, 3,6-dideoxy-d-glucose and d-gulose, which have two alterations from the d-glucose structure, were not, or only very weakly, transported. The results are interpreted as indicating the presence of a hydrogen bond from the carrier to the hydroxyl group at C-3 of d-glucose. Spatial requirements are also discussed. New syntheses are reported for 3-chloro-3-deoxy- and 3-bromo-3-deoxy-d-glucose and 3,6-dideoxy-d-glucose.

Construct ZnSeTe/ZnTe Nanostructures with the Tunable Emission from 450 to 760 nm.

J Phys Chem Lett

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Physics and Technology for Advanced Batteries, Ministry of Education, College of Physics, Jilin University, Qianjin Street No. 2699, Changchun 130012, China.

Developing heavy-metal-free materials with wide tunable emission is important to light-emitters. The alloying method is utilized in ZnSe magic size clusters (MSCs) with Te to form ZnSeTe and manipulate the band gap structure in ZnSe. The growth of ZnTe on alloyed ZnSeTe quantum dots (QDs) forms ZnSeTe/ZnTe core/shell nanostructures, showing the tunable photoluminescence emission peak from 450 to 760 nm with the different thicknesses of ZnTe shell.

Designing binders to target undruggable proteins presents a formidable challenge in drug discovery. In this work, we provide an algorithmic framework to design short, target-binding linear peptides, requiring only the amino acid sequence of the target protein. To do this, we propose a process to generate naturalistic peptide candidates through Gaussian perturbation of the peptidic latent space of the ESM-2 protein language model and subsequently screen these novel sequences for target-selective interaction activity via a contrastive language-image pretraining (CLIP)-based contrastive learning architecture.

Long-term, immunosuppression-free allograft survival has been induced in human and nonhuman primate (NHP) kidney recipients after nonmyeloablative conditioning and donor bone marrow transplantation (DBMT), resulting in transient mixed hematopoietic chimerism. However, the same strategy has consistently failed in NHP heart transplant recipients. Here, we investigated whether long-term heart allograft survival could be achieved by cotransplanting kidneys from the same donor.

Seasonal and periodic patterns in US COVID-19 mortality using the Variable Bandpass Periodic Block Bootstrap.

PLoS One

January 2025

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health, University at Albany, State University of New York, Rensselaer, New York, United States of America.

Since the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, research into the existence, extent, and pattern of seasonality has been of the highest importance for public health preparation. This study uses a novel bandpass bootstrap approach called the Variable Bandpass Periodic Block Bootstrap to investigate the periodically correlated components including seasonality within US COVID-19 mortality. Bootstrapping to produce confidence intervals for periodic characteristics such as the seasonal mean requires preservation of the periodically correlated component's correlation structure during resampling.

Bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain prominent in the United States among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Doxycycline for post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) is a regimen by which the antibiotic doxycycline is taken after sex to prevent bacterial STDs, such as, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Despite this, this study was conducted because there are a limited number of publications that describe GBMSM's knowledge of, and interest in, taking DoxyPEP and preferences regarding its implementation.
