High pressure processing at different hydration levels as a tool to enhance rice bran stability and techno-functionality.

Food Res Int

February 2025

Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA-CSIC), Carrer del Catedràtic Agustín Escardino Benlloch, 7, 46980 Paterna, Valencia, Spain; Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences, University of Manitoba. Winnipeg, Canada. Electronic address:

High-pressure processing (HPP) enhances food safety and shelf life by inactivating microorganisms and preserving food quality, yet its effectiveness in low-humidity environments has not been evaluated. This study investigated the effects of HPP at 500 MPa for 15 min across varying hydration levels (15, 30, 60, 77 %) on rice bran (RB), aiming to identify microbial effectiveness, besides techno-functional and physicochemical properties. HPP effectively reduced mesophilic bacteria, molds and yeast of RB at > 15 % hydration level, achieving reductions of up to 4 logarithmic cycles in the latter, nearing the detection limit of the method.

Local Polarization Piezoelectric Electric Field Promoted Water Dissociation for Hydroxyl Radical Generation under Ambient Humidity Condition.

Adv Mater

College of Environment and Climate, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution and Health, Jinan University, Guangzhou, 510632, China.

Combining piezocatalysts with mechanical ball milling for dissociating water to generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH) offers unprecedented opportunities for energy conversion and environmental remediation. However, the in-depth insights into the relationship between water and local polarization piezoelectric electric field (LPPEF) are currently lacking, in particularly, the ·OH formation mechanism in ball milling driven piezocatalyst system is not systematically elucidated. To this end, the present work constructs a ball milling driven piezoelectric solid/liquid interface between piezoelectric PbBOCl (PBOC) and different contents of water to investigate LPPEF initiated catalytic reaction.

Hydrogels are natural/synthetic polymer-based materials with a large percentage of water content, usually above 80 %, and are suitable for many application fields such as wearable sensors, biomedicine, cosmetics, agriculture, etc. However, their performance is susceptible to environmental changes in temperature, relative humidity, and mechanical deformation due to their aqueous and soft nature. We investigate the mechanical response of both filled and unfilled alginate/gellan hydrogels using a combined axial-torsional rheometric approach with cylindrical samples of large length/diameter ratio under controlled temperature and relative humidity.

This paper investigates the impact of varying humidity conditions on the carbonation depth in hardened cement paste using a 3-dimensional microscale kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) approach. The kMC algorithm effectively simulates the carbonation process by capturing the interplay between CO diffusion and relative humidity at the microscale, providing insights into macro trends that align with historical models. The study reveals that the maximum carbonation depth is achieved at relative humidity levels between 55 and 65%, where the balance between water and CO diffusion is optimized.

Yunnan Institute of Endemic Diseases Control and Prevention, Yunnan Provincial Key Laboratory for Zoonosis Control and Prevention, Dali, Yunnan 671000, China.

Objective: To predict the potential geographic distribution of in Yunnan Province using random forest (RF) and maximum entropy (MaxEnt) models, so as to provide insights into surveillance and control in Yunnan Province.

Methods: The snail survey data in Yunnan Province from 2015 to 2016 were collected and converted into snail distribution site data. Data of 22 environmental variables in Yunnan Province were collected, including twelve climate variables (annual potential evapotranspiration, annual mean ground surface temperature, annual precipitation, annual mean air pressure, annual mean relative humidity, annual sunshine duration, annual mean air temperature, annual mean wind speed, ≥ 0 ℃ annual accumulated temperature, ≥ 10 ℃ annual accumulated temperature, aridity and index of moisture), eight geographical variables (normalized difference vegetation index, landform type, land use type, altitude, soil type, soil textureclay content, soil texture-sand content and soil texture-silt content) and two population and economic variables (gross domestic product and population).
