The dynamics of the fibrinoplastic process were studied in rat isolated liver, perfused in normothermia with a synthetical medium. For the autohistoradiographical study, 125I-labelled fibrinogen was added to the perfusing medium. The historadiograms obtained suggest that the main link in the rise of trans-hepatic vascular resistance is thickening of the fibrin muff of the sinusoids. Consequent reduction of the capillary permeability determines favourable conditions for stasis and massive precipitation of fibrinogen under the form of fibrin thrombi into the intrahepatic vessels. Streptase addition to the perfusion medium prevents the intervention of these mechanisms during the studied period.

Increased mean platelet volume (MPV) is an independent risk factor of thrombotic events in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Interactions of MPV with platelet aggregation activity and contents of glycoprotein (GP) IIb-IIIa (alphaIIb/beta3 integrin, fibrinogen receptor) and GP Ib (von Willebrand factor receptor) were investigated in this study. Investigation was performed in a group of healthy volunteers (n = 38) and in a group of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Eighty nine ACS patients were included into the study - 69 with and 20 without elevation of ST segment. Blood was collected within the first hour of admission to the clinic (1 day), and then at 3-5 and 8-12 days.

The nature of the lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a))/agonist-stimulated platelet interaction is unclear. The objective was to determine whether Lp(a) inhibits platelet aggregation by displacing fibrinogen from the platelet GPIIb/IIIa receptor. Platelets were washed in Tyrode's buffer and stimulated using 10 micromolar ADP or 2 micrograms/ml collagen.

Melagatran is the active form of the oral direct thrombin inhibitor, ximelagatran. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of different doses of melagatran with heparin or placebo on platelet deposition and relative fibrin content after coronary angioplasty in pigs. After 125I-labelled fibrinogen and autologous 111Indium-labelled platelets had been infused a balloon injury was performed in the left anterior descending and the right coronary arteries.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are the most common infectious micro-organisms isolated from prosthetic devices. To determine whether von Willebrand factor (vWF) acts as an adhesin in bacterial recognition, bacterial binding of recombinant vWF (rvWF) was studied. Eleven CNS strains, belonging to S.
