Sn-based electrodes are promising candidates for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. However, it suffers from deleterious micro-structural deformation as it undergoes drastic volume changes upon lithium insertion and extraction. Progress in designing these materials is limited to complex structures.

Passive earth pressure analysis considering hydraulic and mechanical hysteresis for unsaturated soil.

PLoS One

January 2025

Water Resources Engineering Department, College of Engineering, Salahaddin University, Erbil, Iraq.

This paper addresses the mechanical characteristics of a passive earth pressure problem taking into account water retention curve (SWRC) hysteresis. Both hydraulic (drying and wetting cycles) and mechanical hysteresis were considered. Parametric studies were carried out at various air entry values (AEV = 5-30 kPa), different wall frictions (δ = 0, 0.

Although electrostatic catalysis can enhance the kinetics and selectivity of reactions to produce greener synthetic processes, the highly directional nature of electrostatic interactions has limited widespread application. In this study, the influence of oriented electric fields (OEF) on radical addition and atom abstraction reactions are systematically explored with ion-trap mass spectrometry using structurally diverse distonic radical ions that maintain spatially separated charge and radical moieties. When installed on rigid molecular scaffolds, charged functional groups lock the magnitude and orientation of the internal electric field with respect to the radical site, creating an OEF which tunes the reactivity across the set of gas-phase carbon-centred radical reactions.

Implementing magnetic properties on demand with a dynamic lanthanoid-organic framework.

Chem Sci

December 2024

Instituto de Ciencia Molecular (ICMol), Universidad de Valencia c/Catedrático José Beltrán 2 Paterna 46980 Spain

We present the synthesis of a lanthanoid-organic framework (LOF) featuring a dynamic structure that exhibits tunable magnetic properties. The LOF undergoes breathing and gate-opening phenomena in response to changes in DMF content and N sorption, leading to the emergence of new crystal phases with distinct characteristics. Notably, the desolvated form of the LOF excels as a single-ion magnet, while the fully activated structure demonstrates impressive qubit properties, exhibiting Rabi oscillations up to 60 K.

Anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions have been increasing rapidly in recent years, driving pH and oxygen levels to record low concentrations in the oceans. Eastern boundary upwelling systems such as the California Current System (CCS) experience exacerbated ocean acidification and hypoxia (OAH) due to the physical and chemical properties of the transported deeper waters. Research efforts have significantly increased in recent years to investigate the deleterious effects of climate change on marine species, but have not focused on the impacts of simultaneous OAH stressor exposure.
