Characterization of the Micro-Morphology and Compositional Distribution of Chang'e-5 Lunar Soil Mineral Surfaces Using TOF-SIMS.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Experimental Center of Advanced Materials, School of Materials Science & Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, 100081, China.

The lunar soil samples returned by China's Chang'e-5 (CE-5) contain valuable information on geological evolutions on the Moon. Herein, by employing high-resolution time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), five rock chip samples from the CE-5 lunar soil are characterized in-depth, which reveal micro-morphological and compositional features. From the elemental/molecular ion distribution images, minerals such as pyroxene, ilmenite, feldspar, K-rich glass, silica, and silicate minerals are identified, along with their occurrence states and distribution results.

Effects of laser wavelength and pulse energy on the evaporation behavior of TiN coatings in atom probe tomography: A multi-instrument study.

Ultramicroscopy

January 2025

Christian Doppler Laboratory for Sustainable Hard Coatings at the Department of Materials Science, Montanuniversität Leoben, Franz-Josef-Straße 18, 8700 Leoben, Austria.

The impact of the laser wavelength on accuracy in elemental composition analysis in atom probe tomography (APT) was investigated. Three different commercial atom probe systems - LEAP 3000X HR, LEAP 5000 XR, and LEAP 6000 XR - were systematically compared for a TiN model coating studying the effect of shorter laser wavelengths, especially in the deep ultraviolet (DUV) range, on the evaporation behavior. The findings demonstrate that the use of shorter wavelengths enhances the accuracy in elemental composition, while maintaining similar electric field strengths.

The utilisation of implantable medical devices has become safer and more prevalent since the establishment of sterilisation methods and techniques a century ago. Nevertheless, device-associated infections remain a significant and growing concern, particularly in light of the continued rise in the number of medical device implantations. This underscores the imperative for the development of efficacious prevention and treatment strategies for device-associated infections, as well as further investigation into the design of innovative antibacterial surfaces for medical device applications.

Tracing the birth and intrinsic disorder of loops and domains in protein evolution.

Biophys Rev

December 2024

Evolutionary Bioinformatics Laboratory, Department of Crop Sciences and Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, IL 61801 USA.

Protein loops and structural domains are building blocks of molecular structure. They hold evolutionary memory and are largely responsible for the many functions and processes that drive the living world. Here, we briefly review two decades of phylogenomic data-driven research focusing on the emergence and evolution of these elemental architects of protein structure.

The chemical functionalization of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) was carried out using 2-aminoethyl hydrogen sulfate as the reagent under various experimental conditions via a bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (S2) reaction. The functionalized CNFs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance. The results indicate that the chemical modification was successful, as evidenced by the presence of a band at 1540 cm, corresponding to the N-H bond of the amine group.
