Terebra steering in chalcidoid wasps.

Front Zool

August 2023

Evolutionary Biology of Invertebrates, Institute of Evolution and Ecology, University of Tübingen, Auf der Morgenstelle 28, 72076, Tübingen, Germany.

Various chalcidoid wasps can actively steer their terebra (= ovipositor shaft) in diverse directions, despite the lack of terebral intrinsic musculature. To investigate the mechanisms of these bending and rotational movements, we combined microscopical and microtomographical techniques, together with videography, to analyse the musculoskeletal ovipositor system of the ectoparasitoid pteromalid wasp Lariophagus distinguendus (Förster, 1841) and the employment of its terebra during oviposition. The ovipositor consists of three pairs of valvulae, two pairs of valvifers and the female T9 (9th abdominal tergum).

Cardiac hemangiomas are an exceedingly rare condition, with about 100 cases described in the literature, of which only 13 were valvular. We report the case of a 66-year-old woman, with no prior cardiovascular disease, who presented with an abdominal infection caused by Enterococcus faecalis, complicated by recrudescent fever and new-onset systolic mitral murmur. The transesophageal echocardiogram revealed a large vegetation on the posterior leaflet of the mitral valve, with a high embolic risk, leading to a diagnosis of acute endocarditis.

Organization of the Melanin concentrating hormone secreting neuronal system in the brain of the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus.

J Chem Neuroanat

October 2022

Neuroendocrinology Research Laboratory, Department of Studies in Zoology, Karnatak University, Dharwad 580 003, India. Electronic address:

Melanin concentrating hormone (MCH) is a highly conserved cyclic peptide present in vertebrates. In this study, we describe the organization of MCH-immunoreactive (MCH-ir) cells and fibres in different regions of the brain in the cichlid fish Oreochromis mossambicus. Only MCH-ir fibres were observed in dorsal and ventral subdivisions of the telencephalon, the preoptic area and magnocellular and parvocellular divisions of the nucleus preopticus, and in hypothalamic areas such as the suprachiasmatic nucleus and tuberal area.
