Radiation therapy is one of the most effective treatments for approximately 60% of patients with cancer. During radiation exposure, the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) disrupts the lipid layer of the membrane, leading to subsequent peroxide radical formation. Cimetidine (Cim) and famotidine (Fam) are histamine H2 receptor antagonists (H2 blocker), also known as peptic ulcer drugs, that exert radioprotective effects.

Article Synopsis
  • A study looked at how normal veins can become varicose (VV) and possibly lead to blood clots (SVT) by using samples and special tests to find important genes involved in these changes.
  • They found six key genes that might help explain how VV progresses or gets better, especially focusing on a gene called DACT3, which seems to stop VV from getting worse.
  • The research suggests a drug called Cimetidine could help treat VV and SVT, and the findings can help understand how the immune system is involved in these vein problems.

G Ital Nefrol

August 2024

Nephrology Division. Clínica de la Costa. Barranquilla, Colombia.

Renal functional reserve (RFR) is the kidney capability of increasing its basal glomerular filtration rate (GFR) at least 20% after an adequate stimulus. Renal disorders have been reported in seropositive HIV patients, particularly the decrease in glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), nephrotic syndrome, and proximal tubular deficiency associated with the disease itself or the use of some anti-retroviral treatments. Thus, it was decided to carry out a prospective study in order to evaluate if RFR test was preserved in naive HIV patients.
