Controlling Aedes mosquitoes using densovirus-based biolarvicides: Current status and prospects.

J Invertebr Pathol

March 2025

Maladies Infectieuses et Vecteurs, Ecologie, Génétique, Evolution et Contrôle (MIVEGEC), Montpellier University, IRD, CNRS, Montpellier, France. Electronic address:

Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti are the main vectors of emerging arboviruses, such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses. Entomopathogenic viruses, such as densoviruses, might represent more environmentally friendly control methods. Densoviruses are single-stranded DNA viruses belonging to the Parvoviridae family and three species are known to infect mosquitoes: Protoambidensovirus dipteran, Brevihamaparvovirus dipteran 1, and Brevihamaparvovirus dipteran 2.

Background: Information on the status of insecticide resistance in malaria vectors is critical for implementing effective malaria vector control. The Sierra Leone National Malaria Control Programme, in collaboration with the PMI VectorLink project, assessed the resistance status to insecticides commonly used in public health, and associated resistance mechanisms in Anopheles gambiae, the main vector of malaria in Sierra Leone.

Methods: The susceptibility of An.

Mosquitoes as vectors of life-threatening diseases pose significant risks to human health. While essential oils (EOs) are increasingly utilized as potential mosquitocides, their specific biochemical, genotoxic, and molecular impacts on mosquitoes are not well-documented. This study evaluates the biochemical, genotoxic, and molecular effects of five EOs on Culex pipiens larvae.

In recent years, the emergence of insecticide resistance has been a major challenge to global public health. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of this phenomenon in mosquito vectors is paramount for the formulation of effective vector control strategies. This review explores the current knowledge of insecticide resistance mechanisms through omics approaches.

Background: Dirofilaria immitis is a mosquito-transmitted filarial parasite causing heartworm disease in dogs. The parasite may cause a significant disease burden to the dog population in high prevalence areas and is mainly managed through prophylactic treatments.

Methods: In this modelling study, the effect of a prophylactic treatment with moxidectin and sarolaner on heartworm disease dynamics was investigated in dogs.
