Tween-ether toxoplasma antigen for the complement fixation test was verified on a more extensive clinical material. From a series of 949 patient's sera, positive reaction was obtained in 44% of samples with the tween-ether antigen and in only 33.5% of samples with the FT antigen. All sera, giving positive results only with the tween-ether antigen, were also positive in the Sabin-Feldman test. The authors believe that by using this type of more sensitive antigen, containing also the cell-wall components of Toxoplasma gondii, it would be possible to standardize serological examination by the complement fixation test on the basis of an international standard serum.

In some measles virus strains protein synthesis is restricted or reduced at higher temperature incubation. But in wild-type Buk strain and L-16 vaccine strain no changes in viral protein synthesis at 40 degrees C were shown. Radiolabelled Buk and L-16 proteins were precipitated with reconvalescent sera, vaccinated children's sera, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis patients' sera and rabbit antisera.

Nine pigeon paramyxovirus type 1 isolates from the United States and Canada were characterized and three of the isolates were pathotyped before and after passage in chickens and serial passage in chicken embryos. One isolate previously passaged in Madin Darby bovine kidney cells was also pathotyped after chicken and embryo passage. Hemagglutination (HA) titers of all isolates were low when tested by microtiter procedures and all were negative by rapid-plate HA.

The cellular immune response of seven rhesus macaques immunized with Tween-ether-treated macaque strain of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVMAC) and three non-vaccinated control animals was investigated. Immunization elicited antigen-specific proliferating CD4+ cells in five of seven monkeys. Proliferating T cells were found in all animals protected from a first virus challenge.

Two vaccine trials were conducted with low- and high-dose purified Twen-ether-treated SIVmac adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide using rhesus macaques. In the first experiment 7 macaques were immunized with a total amount of 560 micrograms protein and 3 animals served as controls. After the immunization period the vaccinees exhibited ELISA titers up to 1:1280 and 5 immunized animals showed an antigen-specific proliferative response.

In order to examine the efficiency of an AIDS vaccine potentially acceptable for human use we have investigated a split vaccine. Since such vaccines are safe and efficient, they have been in use for many years to protect man against enveloped RNA viruses, e.g.
