The present study aims to determine if morphological differences of the scaphoid, trapezoid, and second metacarpal are associated with thumb osteoarthritis by comparing three-dimensional bone models of healthy controls and osteoarthritis patients. Fifty-eight patients with moderate to severe thumb osteoarthritis (modified Eaton ≥ II) and 35 healthy controls from a larger completed investigation were examined. To quantify morphological variations, a statistical shape model was created that classified binary with respect to the Eaton grading system: non-osteoarthritis or moderate/severe osteoarthritis (II-IV).

Surgeons use anatomical landmarks like the scaphoid tubercle, pisiform, trapezial tubercle and hook of hamate, along with Kaplan cardinal line (KCL) to avoid injury to the recurrent motor branch (RMB) of the median nerve during carpal tunnel release. The presence of transverse muscle fibres (TMF) overlying the transverse carpal ligament (TCL) may suggest proximity of the RMB, but their anatomical relationship is unclear. In this study, we evaluated the accuracy of anatomical landmarks to the RMB, TMF origin and insertion, and examined the relationship between TMF presence and RMB running patterns.

Trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis is frequently associated with scaphotrapeziotrapezoid osteoarthritis. Long-term outcomes have not been reported for trapeziometacarpal protheses in patients with radiological pan-trapezial osteoarthritis that is symptomatic only in the trapeziometacarpal compartment. The primary objective of this retrospective multicenter multi-operator study was to evaluate the effectiveness of trapeziometacarpal arthroplasty for pain relief in patients with radiographic pan-trapezial osteoarthritis without symptomatic scaphotrapeziotrapezoid involvement.
