Improving hemodialysis patient depression outcomes with acupuncture: A randomized controlled trial.

Acta Psychol (Amst)

January 2025

Department of acupuncture and moxibustion, Nanchang Hongdu Hospital of traditional Chinese medicine, China; Jiangxi clinical research center of acupuncture and moxibustion medicine, China; Nanchang mayor Key Laboratory of snake moxibustion effect mechanism and Governor Vessel specificity, China.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture as a supplementary treatment for mild to moderate depression in hemodialysis patients.

Method: This multicenter, randomized, controlled, single-masked trial included 64 hemodialysis patients aged 18-75 divided into two groups. One group received genuine acupuncture, while the other received sham acupuncture over 12 weeks.

Generative models have revolutionized de novo drug design, allowing to produce molecules on-demand with desired physicochemical and pharmacological properties. String based molecular representations, such as SMILES (Simplified Molecular Input Line Entry System) and SELFIES (Self-Referencing Embedded Strings), have played a pivotal role in the success of generative approaches, thanks to their capacity to encode atom- and bond- information and ease-of-generation. However, such 'atom-level' string representations could have certain limitations, in terms of capturing information on chirality, and synthetic accessibility of the corresponding designs.

The herbal extracts of four traditional plants; namely leaves, fruits leaves, and seeds, were identified for their main constituents using UHPLC/QTOF-MS/MS. Then, a pharmacology-based analysis and molecular docking verification were established targeting the evaluation of each individual herbal extract for their antidiabetic/anti-obesity potential besides their safety. Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were used to evaluate antiobesity and insulinotropic effects against insulin (10 U/Kg, IP) and metformin (100 mg/Kg, per oral) as standard regimens.

Today, weed control in agricultural systems is largely based on the use of synthetic pesticides. However, the use of these compounds is increasingly controversial among farmers and consumers, who point to their harmful properties for human health and the environment. In this context, the development of eco-friendly agricultural approaches and practices is becoming essential, and allelopathy represents a promising solution.

Through biochemical transformation of host-derived bile acids (BAs), gut bacteria mediate host-microbe crosstalk and sit at the interface of nutrition, the microbiome, and disease. BAs play a crucial role in human health by facilitating the absorption of dietary lipophilic nutrients, interacting with hormone receptors to regulate host physiology, and shaping gut microbiota composition through antimicrobial activity. Bile acid deconjugation by bacterial bile salt hydrolase (BSH) has long been recognized as the first necessary BA modification required before further transformations can occur.
