Due to the complex nature of correctional facilities, correctional health care professionals (CHPs) are at high risk of experiencing the harms of helping such as burnout, vicarious trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although traditionally applied to military populations, the construct of moral injury has gained increasing application to health care and bears relevance to correctional health care. This qualitative study examines the prevalence of moral injury among CHPs while considering the moral dilemmas and ethical challenges of delivering care in a carceral environment.

Jail programming is rarely informed by site-specific health needs, diagnostic-specific screening tools that are validated, or the input of incarcerated individuals. Using the community needs assessment (CNA) framework, we aimed to fill these gaps among people incarcerated in the Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility (PCRDF), Arkansas' largest jail. Participants were 179 adults at the PCRDF who completed surveys and open-ended questions focused on (a) their mental and behavioral health and (b) programming needs at the facility.

A female in her 20s presented with a diminution of vision in the right eye (RE) following an open globe injury (scleral penetration) and repair a year back. At the presentation, she had low intraocular pressure (IOP) of 7 mm Hg, posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC), retrolental vitreous bands incarcerated at the penetration site, disc oedema, tortuous vessels and choroidal folds. Inferotemporal and superonasal cyclodialysis clefts were detected on CASIA 2 optical coherence tomography (OCT).
