Comparison of Tc Pertechnetate Thyroid Uptake Rates by Gamma Probe and Gamma Camera Methods for Differentiating Graves' Disease and Thyroiditis.

Nucl Med Mol Imaging

February 2022

Department of Nuclear Medicine, Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan College of Medicine, 88 Olympic-ro 43-gil, Songpa-gu, Seoul, 05505 Republic of Korea.

Background: Technetium-99 m (Tc) pertechnetate thyroid uptake rate can be measured with a gamma probe or gamma camera. This study was performed to compare their diagnostic accuracy for evaluating patients with thyrotoxicosis.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed Tc pertechnetate thyroid uptake rate records of patients by both gamma probe and camera methods at a tertiary center in Korea from November 2019 to June 2020.

Objective: The value of salivary gland scintigraphy (SGS) in the evaluation of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) remains controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of quantitative SGS in patients with xerostomia and to assess the correlation between scintigraphic parameters and pathological features of salivary glands.

Methods: Medical records of 165 patients with xerostomia who underwent [99mTc] pertechnetate SGS and labial biopsy were retrospectively reviewed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to distinguish between different causes of thyrotoxicosis, particularly Graves' disease (GD) and thyroiditis, which is crucial for effective treatment planning.
  • Technetium-99m (99mTc) scanning is the standard method for this differentiation, but it has limitations such as availability issues and contraindications in some patients.
  • The research found that measuring the peak systolic velocity of the inferior thyroid artery (PSV-ITA) using color-flow Doppler ultrasound (CFDU) effectively differentiates GD from thyroiditis, showing high sensitivity (91%) and specificity (89%) similar to 99mTc scanning.

Comparison of post-therapeutic sequential 131I whole-body scans in the detection of metastatic thyroid cancer.

Q J Nucl Med Mol Imaging

September 2020

Department of Nuclear Medicine, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China -

Background: The aim was to compare the detect ability of three sequential 131I whole-body scans (tri-WBS) on the second, third, and fourth day after 131I therapy for metastatic thyroid cancer.

Methods: Differentiated thyroid cancer patients who received oral high-dose 131I therapy underwent routinely tri-WBS on the second, third, and fourth day after total or near-total thyroidectomy in Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University. We enrolled 137 patients with 261 tri-WBSs in this study between January 2015 and November 2017.

Radioisotopic Purity of Sodium Pertechnetate 99mTc Produced with a Medium-Energy Cyclotron: Implications for Internal Radiation Dose, Image Quality, and Release Specifications.

J Nucl Med

October 2015

Sherbrooke Molecular Imaging Center, CRCHUS, Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada Department of Nuclear Medicine and Radiobiology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Université de Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada; and.

Unlabelled: Cyclotron production of 99mTc is a promising route to supply 99mTc radiopharmaceuticals. Higher 99mTc yields can be obtained with medium-energy cyclotrons in comparison to those dedicated to PET isotope production. To take advantage of this capability, evaluation of the radioisotopic purity of 99mTc produced at medium energy (20-24 MeV) and its impact on image quality and dosimetry was required.
