DNA methylation is the best-studied epigenetic mechanism for regulating gene transcription and maintaining genome stability. Current research progress of transcriptional regulation by DNA methylation mostly focuses on promoter region where hypomethylated CpG islands are present transcriptional activity, as hypermethylated CpG islands generally result in gene repression. Recently, the DNA methylation patterns across the gene body (intragenic methylation) have increasingly attracted attention towards their role in transcriptional regulation and efficiency, due to the improvement of numerous genome-wide DNA methylation profiling studies.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma susceptibility candidate 3 (PTCSC3) is a newly identified non-coding RNA, which is highly thyroid-specific. Dramatic downregulation in thyroid cancers suggests its potential roles in the occurrence and development of thyroid tumors. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of PTCSC3 on the biological features of thyroid cancer cells and to explore its possible function as a competing endogenous RNA to bind with miRNAs.

Two cases of papillary thryoid carcinoma presenting as a cystic lateral neck mass are reported. This tumour characteristically presents in patients under 40-years-old and in the presence of an occult primary tumour may mimic a branchial cyst. In such cases simple aspiration of the cyst will produce a chocolate-brown serous fluid which excludes the diagnosis of a branchial cyst and is characteristic of papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Solitary thyroid nodules in childhood had a 40% to 70% incidence of malignancy in the era of low-dose therapeutic irradiation. In the last 15 years, 36 children have been evaluated for such nodules, with a final diagnoses of carcinoma in 17%, adenoma in 58%, and miscellaneous diagnoses in 26%. All patients with carcinoma were euthyroid and had no history of irradiation in infancy.
