Diagnostic and Therapeutic Aspects of Monoclonal Gammopathies of Renal Significance (MGRS): An Update.

Diagnostics (Basel)

December 2024

Unit of Clinical Pathology, Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, University of Foggia, University Hospital "Policlinico Riuniti", Viale Luigi Pinto, 71122 Foggia, Italy.

Monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance (MGRS) refers to a group of renal disorders caused by a monoclonal immunoglobulin (MIg), secreted by a non-malignant B-cell clone. Unlike overt multiple myeloma or B-cell proliferation, MGRS does not meet those diagnostic criteria. However, it is associated with significant morbidity, due to severe renal, and sometimes systemic, lesions induced by the MIg.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global health threat, leading to increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. This study aimed to identify the most common bacterial pathogens and their resistance profiles from 2179 positive clinical cultures from inpatients at "Victor Babes" Hospital of Infectious Disease and Pneumoftiziology Timisoara in 2023. Samples were collected from sputum, bronchial aspiration, hemoculture, urine, wound secretions, catheter samples, and other clinical specimens.

Source segregation and treatment of urine and faeces from dairy cattle reduces GHG and NH emissions in covered storage.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

Agricultural Biosystems Engineering Group, Department of Plant Sciences, Wageningen University and Research, P.O. Box 16, 6700 AA, Wageningen, the Netherlands.

Managing dairy excreta as slurry can result in significant emissions of ammonia (NH) and greenhouse gases (GHGs) during storage and thereafter. Additionally, slurry often has an imbalanced nitrogen (N) to phosphorus (P) ratio for crop fertilization. While various treatments exist to address emissions and nutrient imbalances, each has trade-offs that can result in pollution swapping.

Treatment of severely injured patients represents a major challenge, in part due to the unpredictable risk of major adverse events, including death. Preemptive personalized treatment aimed at preventing these events is a crucial objective of patient management; however, the currently available scoring systems provide only moderate guidance. Biomarkers from proteomics/peptidomics studies hold promise for improving the current situation, ultimately enabling precision medicine based on individual molecular profiles.

First Report from Saudi Arabia of Trimethylaminuria Caused by a Premature Stop Codon Mutation in the Gene.

Appl Clin Genet

December 2024

Medical Genomics Research Department, King Abdullah International Medical Research Center, King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Background: Trimethylaminuria (TMAU) is a rare recessive genetic disorder with limited global prevalence. To date, there have been no official reports of TMAU cases documented in Saudi Arabia.

Purpose: In this study, we developed a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method for the analysis of trimethylamine (TMA) and Trimethylamine N-Oxide (TMAO) in urine and plasma samples for the first reported case of TMAU in Saudi Arabia.
