Purpose: Human infection by Helicobacter pylori is associated with an increase in the number of gastrin-producing G cells and a concomitant decrease of somatostatin-producing D cells. However, to our knowledge, changes in G and D cell numbers in response to infection with H. pylori CagA-positive strains containing different number of EPIYA-C phosphorylation sites have not been analyzed to date.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are currently the most effective and most widely used agents for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Despite the efficacy of these agents in healing and symptom relief, a substantial proportion of patients require twice-daily therapy with PPIs, and break-through symptoms cause others to use over-the-counter antacids and histamine 2-receptor antagonists to supplement their PPI therapy. Major strategies that are being pursued include the development of agents that have a faster onset of action for on-demand therapy; have better control of acid secretion, resulting in improved healing in advanced grades of esophagitis and better symptom control; and agents that decrease transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxations (TLESRs), thereby reducing distal acid exposure and weakly acidic refluxate.

Aim: To construct two kinds of anti-gastrin immunogen based on P64K protein from Neisseria meningitids and to compare their immunogenic effect.
Methods: G17P64K gene was cloned and ligated into pET28a plasmid, then transformed into BL21(DE3). After inoculation of LB medium and IPTG induction, the recombinant protein was solubly expressed at a high level.

Background: Gastrin hormone is trophic to in vitro gastric cancer, and the antigastrin antibodies (AGAs) are antiproliferative and antimetastatic. Human gastric cancers overexpress gastrin genes and receptors that react to gastrin's trophic effects. Immunogen G17DT elicits a specific and high-affinity AGA.

The medical management of patients with gastrointestinal diseases is advancing rapidly. At a recent symposium held during Digestive Disease Week in Chicago in May of 2005, specific attention was given to the future prospects for medical management of 3 common gastrointestinal disease areas: antisecretory therapy, chronic hepatitis C, and inflammatory bowel disease. Antisecretory approaches include drug combinations including a proton pump inhibitor, potassium competitive acid blockers, and antigastrin agents.
