The effect of 3-, 6- and 12-day courses of anti-lymphocytic IgG treatment (1 ml of 2 g/100 ml) on the primary humoral response of random bred Wistar rats has been investigated. The primary response to alum precipitated bovine serum albumin was suppressed by all these courses. In contrast however the primary response to sheep erythrocytes was suppressed by the 6-day treatment alone or by a 3-day course augmented with azathioprine treatment. Additional experiments performed in hooded rats confirm that prolonged courses of anti-lymphocytic globulin failed to exert an antidotal effect.

The results of the preliminary part of a controlled therapeutic trial of antilymphocytic globulin (ALG) in severe acute ulcerative colitis are presented. 10 patients have been studied in this part of the trial, 5 receiving standard treatment with corticosteroids, and 5 receiving ALG, in a dose of 1 g daily for 5 days, in addition to the standard treatment. No difference has been observed in the clinical course of the patients in the two groups.

The cytotoxicity-inducing capacity was restricted to certain dilutions of anti-lymphocytic serum above and below which no cytotoxic effect was obtained. This optimal concentration shifted towards higher dilutions in sera taken late during the immunization course.
