Adipose tissue (AT), is a major endocrine organ that plays a key role in health and disease. However, adipose dysfunctions, especially altered energy metabolism, have been under-investigated as white adipocytes have relatively low mitochondrial density. Nevertheless, recent studies suggest that mitochondria could play a major role in AT disorders and that AT mitochondrial activity could depend on adiposity level and location.

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) involves femoral head osteonecrosis caused by disrupted blood supply, leading to joint deformity and early osteoarthritis. This study investigates the role of miRNA-223-5p in regulating hypoxia-induced apoptosis and enhancing osteogenesis in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Utilizing a juvenile New Zealand white rabbit model of LCPD established through femoral neck ligation, we transfected BMSCs with miR-223-5p mimics, inhibitors, and controls, followed by hypoxic exposure.

Background: Children with end-stage heart failure listed for cardiac transplantation may require mechanical ventilation and/or circulatory support whilst awaiting transplantation. A subgroup of these patients is unable to wean off mechanical ventilator support and undergo tracheostomy to enhance quality of life and allow de-escalation of intensive care. There is limited evidence of the use of tracheostomy associated with pediatric cardiac transplantation.

Harnessing deep learning to detect bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome from chest CT.

Commun Med (Lond)

January 2025

Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Department of Medicine, Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), University of Lausanne (UNIL), Lausanne, Switzerland.

Background: Bronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome (BOS), a fibrotic airway disease that may develop after lung transplantation, conventionally relies on pulmonary function tests (PFTs) for diagnosis due to limitations of CT imaging. Deep neural networks (DNNs) have not previously been used for BOS detection. This study aims to train a DNN to detect BOS in CT scans using an approach tailored for low-data scenarios.

Mesenchymal stem cell conditioned medium improves hypoxic injury to protect islet graft function.

August 2024

Department of Radiology, Third Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha 410013, China.

Objectives: Islet transplantation is one of the most promising curative methods for type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), but early hypoxic death of the graft post-transplantation impedes successful treatment. To improve the efficacy of islet transplantation and enhance islet cell resistance to hypoxia, reducing hypoxic injury before revascularization is crucial. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are known to regulate immune responses and protect against hypoxic damage through paracrine mechanisms.
