Background: In recent years, the incorporation of LAMAs into asthma therapy has been expected to enhance symptom control. However, a significant number of patients with asthma continue to experience poorly managed symptoms. There have been limited investigations on LAMA-induced airway alterations in asthma treatment employing IOS.

Background: Published reference equations for impulse oscillometry (IOS) usually encompass a specific age group but not the entire lifespan. This may lead to discordant predicted values when two or more non-coincident equations can be applied to the same person, or when a person moves from one equation to the next non-convergent equation as he or she gets older. Thus, our aim was to provide a single reference equation for each IOS variable that could be applied from infancy to old age.

Objective: Pulse-wave velocity (PWV), a common measure of arterial stiffness, can be measured continuously and across multiple body sites using photoplethysmography (PPG). The objective was to determine whether a simple photoplethysmography PPG PWV method agrees with a referent device.

Approach: Photoplethysmography heart-finger PWV (hfPWV) and heart-toe PWV (htPWV) were compared to oscillometric carotid-wrist PWV (cwPWV) and carotid-ankle PWV (caPWV) referent measurements, respectively.

Impaired Respiratory System Resistance and Reactance Are Associated With Bronchial Wall Thickening in Persistent Asthma.

J Allergy Clin Immunol Pract

May 2023

Scottish Centre for Respiratory Research, School of Medicine, University of Dundee, Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Background: A recent study demonstrated a significant correlation between bronchial biopsy airway remodeling and quantitative computed tomography looking at bronchial wall thickness.

Objective: To identify clinical associations with bronchial wall thickness in moderate to severe asthma.

Methods: Ninety-two respiratory physician-diagnosed Global Initiative for Asthma-defined patients with moderate to severe asthma were included in this retrospective cohort study.

We develop, automate and evaluate a calibration-free technique to estimate human carotid artery blood pressure from force-coupled ultrasound images. After acquiring images and force, we use peak detection to align the raw force signal with an optical flow signal derived from the images. A trained convolutional neural network selects a seed point within the carotid in a single image.
