Lettuce ( L.) is a popular leafy vegetable valued for its dietary fiber, antioxidants, and beneficial vitamins. This study presents a comprehensive spatio-temporal analysis of the lettuce metabolome, revealing complex dynamics in metabolite accumulation influenced by plant age, leaf position, proximodistal distribution within a leaf, and head closure.

In this issue of the JCI, Ancel, Michaud, and colleagues used a high-content imaging screen to identify nicotinamide and pyridoxine as promoters of MuSC function. The combination of the two compounds promoted MuSC function in vivo in aged mice and in primary cells isolated from older individuals.

Skeletal muscle relies on resident muscle stem cells (MuSCs) for growth and repair. Aging and muscle diseases impair MuSC function, leading to stem cell exhaustion and regenerative decline that contribute to the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. In the absence of clinically available nutritional solutions specifically targeting MuSCs, we used a human myogenic progenitor high-content imaging screen of natural molecules from food to identify nicotinamide (NAM) and pyridoxine (PN) as bioactive nutrients that stimulate MuSCs and have a history of safe human use.

We describe a novel algorithm, 'LPEM', that given a steady-state flux vector from a (possibly genome-scale) metabolic model, decomposes that vector into a set of weighted elementary modes such that the sum of these elementary modes is equal to the original flux vector. We apply the algorithm to a genome scale metabolic model of the human pathogen Campylobacter jejuni. This organism is unusual in that it has an absolute growth requirement for oxygen, despite being able to operate the electron transport chain anaerobically.

Background: Mare milk has often been considered a food product with potential functional properties. However, the bioactive compound composition of mare milk, including vitamins and other minor bioactive compounds, as well as factors affecting this composition have scarcely been studied. Therefore, the present study aimed to characterize the changes during lactation in the content of water- and fat-soluble vitamins and total polyphenols, and the total antioxidant capacity of mare milk from semi-extensive farms.
