Radiographic and ultrasonographic findings of seminal vesiculitis with nonmineral stones in a guinea pig: Case report.

Vet Radiol Ultrasound

January 2025

Department of Veterinary Medicine, Universidade de São Paulo, Campus de Pirassununga FZEA, Pirassununga, São Paulo, Brazil.

This case report refers to a 1-year-old Guinea pig showing signs of anorexia and antipain posture. On abdominal radiography, five rounded mineral opaque structures were evident in the mid-caudal abdomen. On ultrasound, a right seminal vesicle with a reduction in diameter was observed, containing less echogenic material than the contralateral one, with five oval structures with a hyperechogenic contour and a central hypoechogenic area, forming acoustic shadowing.

Department of Radiology, Boston Children's Hospital, 300 Longwood Avenue, Boston, MA 02115, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Zinner Syndrome (ZS) is a rare congenital condition combining seminal vesicle cysts with urinary tract abnormalities, usually asymptomatic in childhood and presenting later with various symptoms.
  • A 22-year study identified 20 pediatric cases, analyzing demographics, symptoms, and imaging results which showed renal and seminal vesicle abnormalities, with surgical treatments performed for symptomatic patients.
  • Early diagnosis is critical, often requiring advanced imaging and a multidisciplinary approach for effective management of ZS, particularly for symptomatic cases that may benefit from surgery.

Purpose: Isolated recurrence in remnants of the seminal vesicles (SV) after treatment of primary prostate cancer (PCa) has become a more frequent entity with the widespread use of more sensitive next-generation imaging modalities. Salvage vesiculectomy is hypothesized to be a worthwhile management option in these patients. The primary goal of this study is to describe the surgical technique of this new treatment option.

Hematospermia is a common, but anxiety-provoking genitourinary condition. In instances without spontaneous resolution, pharmacologic intervention with a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor has been shown to be successful. In cases of refractory hematospermia, robotic-assisted laparoscopic seminal vesiculectomy may provide a definitive treatment option.

Seminal vesicle calculi are a rare entity that may present with hematospermia, painful ejaculation, or urinary complaints. We present a case of a 40-year-oldmale with complaints of hematospermia, ejaculatory pain, and perineal discomfort in the last five years. A 7 mm left seminal vesicle calculi were diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and a laparoscopic robot-assisted vesiculectomy was performed.
