The Potential Metalloestrogenic Effect of Aluminum on Breast Cancer Risk for Antiperspirant Users.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2024

Students' Scientific Society at the Department of Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Wroclaw Medical University, 50-556 Wroclaw, Poland.

The etiopathogenesis of breast cancer depends on genetic conditions, but recently more attention has been paid to the dependence of BC on certain environmental factors, for example, metalloestrogens, which include aluminum (Al) contained in antiperspirants used daily. The use of Al derivatives in antiperspirants in concentrations specified by the FDA, as well as European regulations (SCCS, 2020), do not classify Al as a hazardous and carcinogenic substance for humans. However, Al used to treat excessive sweating raises concerns, as many in vitro studies indicate that it can cause gene instability, change gene expression or increase oxidative stress, and also affect the body's hormonal balance as a metalloestrogen.

Radon Exposure and Gestational Diabetes.

JAMA Netw Open

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, New York, New York.

Importance: Understanding environmental risk factors for gestational diabetes (GD) is crucial for developing preventive strategies and improving pregnancy outcomes.

Objective: To examine the association of county-level radon exposure with GD risk in pregnant individuals.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This multicenter, population-based cohort study used data from the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-Be (nuMoM2b) cohort, which recruited nulliparous pregnant participants from 8 US clinical centers between October 2010 and September 2013.

Heavy metal(loid)s accumulation and human health risk assessment in wheat after long-term application of various urban and rural organic fertilizers.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Institute of Plant Nutrition, Resources and Environment, Beijing Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Beijing 100097, China. Electronic address:

Composting urban and rural wastes into organic fertilizers for land application is considered the best way to dispose of and recycle waste resources. However, there are some concerns about the long-term effects of applying various organic fertilizers on soils, food safety, and health risks derived from heavy metal(loid)s (HMs). A long-term field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of continuous application of chicken manure compost (CM), sewage sludge compost (SSC), and domestic waste compost (DWC) for wheat on the accumulation, transfer, and health risks of HMs.

Transgenerational Reproductive and Developmental Toxicity Induced by N-Nitrosodimethylamine and Its Metabolite Formaldehyde in Drosophila melanogaster.

J Appl Toxicol

January 2025

Laboratorio de Genética y Toxicología Ambiental-Banco de Moscas, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City, Mexico.

N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a known water disinfection byproduct (DBP) characterized as a potent hepatotoxin, promutagen, and probable human carcinogen; this is because of the metabolites associated with its biotransformation. The metabolism of NDMA produces formaldehyde, another alkylating agent and DBP. Both compounds are generated from natural and anthropogenic sources, but the safety restrictions applied to NDMA do not extend to the uses of formaldehyde.

Background: Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with incidence and mortality significantly affected by population ageing and changes in the prevalence of risk factors. Lung nodules, which are often detected incidentally on imaging studies, pose a significant diagnostic challenge as they may indicate both benign and malignant processes. Correct diagnosis and management of these nodules is therefore essential to optimize clinical outcomes.
